I need a term to describe a child born before the marriage of his/her parents but who is presumably automatically legitimised by the marriage. I have thought of 'pre-nuptial' but wonder if this is self-explanatory or, better still, if there's already an accepted term. This state of affairs has happened more than once in my family. Sara (Wales)
Trish, The IGI has 2 more children for this family, Alexandrina and William George, also it has Baillie as William's second name, which I am guessing is a family name, possibly his mother's. The IGI notes state this information was submitted by an LDS Church member however I found Alexandrina's birth (in 1830) in the Clyne Parish Register of Births, which makes me think the LDS Church member obtained the information from local parish records. Has anyone else had a similar experience with the IGI? Also would you know where Cambusmore was in Sutherland, I can't find it in my Gazetteer of Scotland. Ian, According to www.whoownsscotland.org, Cambusmore is a 14,220 acre estate [which was recently sold - see also www.thefrasers.com/nessie/news/nesspapr060802.html] located north of Dornoch and Embo, just west of Loch Fleet. I found it using both www.streetmap.co.uk and multimap.com. In 1824 I have a Gentleman? who was fined £2.00 for "uncleaness" by the Church of Scotland around this time he had a son. In 1835 the same gentleman had another son and was fined again for " fornication with ---- " by the Church of Scotland Question is is this the same Crime with a different name? Good Morning, I am puzzled by your Whitehill Sutherland. The only really well known Whitehill are the Standing stones in NE Aberdeenshire. There is another Whitehill in Kelso on the Scottish Borders and yet another in Midlothian which is around the area of Edinburgh. Anybody else got anymore???? Hi Celeste, This was in the Northern Times of 16 December 1915. Mrs. Gordon, Whitehill, Loth received word from the War Office on Monday that her son Sergeant Donald Gordon, Cameron Highlanders was Killed In Action on September 25th. He acted as postman for the district for a number of years and afterwards emigrated to Canada. He was a reservist in the Cameron Highlanders and rejoined his regiment at the outbreak of the war. He had taken part in a number of engagements. This may be your Whitehill - I certainly can't find it on any maps that I have of the Loth Area. These articles are particularly poignant at this time. Sheila Mackay Edinburgh Scotland
Does anyone know where Whitehill, Sutherland is or was? Thanks for any suggestions. Celeste

Ian, You probably know that William's middle name was Baillie? I don't know where I got this information from [should be referencing my sources obviously!]. William's wife Georgina would have been a niece and cousin to my REED ancestors. They had at least 2 children, Elizabeth and Gabriel. Have you looked William up in scottishdocuments.com? I think he could be the one listed as William ROSS, surgeon at Cambusmore, Sutherland. The record is dated 1847, filed at Dornoch Sheriff Court and is 5 pages long [in my experience, the actual number usually turns out to be less but you get someone else's pages thrown in]. I'd be most interested in whatever you find out about William and Georgina. Good luck. Hi All, I noticed the surgeon for the Local Militia list assembled for training at Dornoch in 1813 was William Ross. By 1828 he was Assistant Surgeon of 7th Dragoon Guards and married Georgina Reed in the same year. Georgina was the daughter of Gabriel Reed who had the sheep farm at Kilcalmkill. Can anyone tell me anything more about William Ross and his family? Thanks, Ian
