That's brilliant. I think you are right that its not a particularly common name in the area. I know that Irish workers came over at busy times on the farms but I don't know if it was going on this early. My thoughts being that perhaps an earlier ancestor had come over for the harvest or haymaking and met a local girl. I think the Borders family History Society may publish a booklet of MIs for Lauder - anyone know?
