I have received the death cirtificate from the Marine Registery for my wifes G.G.Grandfather. It states that his nationality is Lanark, is this where he was born or is it another name for Scottish. Also it says Last Place of Abode,( Sailor`s Home Liverpool ) is this where the sailors lived .Would greatly appreciate, if anyone could explain these to me. Thanks in advance. George
Good morning George, "Lanark" would be his place of birth ( probably county) as shown on his seamen's papers. My Discharge Book (1953) shows only the county as my place of birth "Sailor's Home Liverpool" Right up to the mid 20th C a number of seamen, not being married or having close relatives , looked on the SH as their "home" . They would pay off a vessel and stay in the SH until such time as they were ready to sign on again. The Sailor's Home in Leith was used for this purpose right up to the late 1950's - it is now the Malmaison Hotel. Often a ship's master or chief engineer would call there looking for crew to man their ship. Regards. John. John D.Stevenson, Clear blue skies, calm, 4C.
