    3. Hi Alison, I'm a little puzzled by your notes about the Ninian Elliots. I have Ninian, born 1735 and Marrying 3 women Janet Douglas 1745-1834,Margaret Brydon 1730-1756 and Esther Crozier 1731-66. And then the younger Ninian (son of Janet Douglas) marrying Margaret Nichol 1780-1863. Have I got this wrong? The Armstrongs of Riccarton Mill are a formidable undertaking because the same family were tenants in the mill continually for 150 years. The Thomas Armstrong who married Christian Elliot was the third son of Thomas Armstrong of Sorbie in Ewesdale, note not Sorbietrees. Archibald Armstrong of Sorbietrees was an ancester of William Armstrong of Sorbietrees who was shot aged 38 by the Rev Joseph Smith of Walton, Cumberland on the night of Wednesday 16th April 1851 in somewhat suspicious circumstances. The Glendinning family are interesting as well with many claims to fame notably by Adam a soldier who served all over Europe and was in the funeral party of Nelson's funeral, and was Lieutenant in the Royal Wagon Train. When he retired from the Scots Greya, as they were to become, he came back to Copshaw where he died on 4th March 1851 at the age of 88yrs. Sorry to take so long and to ramble on so but your questions are 'very big ones' and it's difficult to know how to respond. Please come back if there's anything more specific you need. 3. Dear Roy Many thanks for your information However there is slight confusion over THOMAS GLENDINNING. I have been going over all my old notes and letters and have the following information from Ann Mee in a letter she wrote in 1992 From Ann Mee "Adam's son Thomas Glendinning, born 1797 entered service with the Royal Wagon Train in 1813, was married in August,Canada in 1821 and must have lived until his death in 1870 in Chatham, Canada" I have photocopies of some of his service records from the Public Record Office The following from A de Caen 1871 Census for Chatham, Kent Coounty, Ontario, 1871, district 002,sub District G, Div 1, page 47: Jane GLENDINNING, age 48, birthplace Ireland, widow, Religion C of E Under Nominal return of the deaths within last 12 months page 2 : Thomas Glendenning, age 73,birthplace Scotland, Religion C of E, Major in Army It is ADAM GLENDINNING WHO DIED IN 1851 ENTRY 79 IN CASTLETON MIS His daughter Mary married John Grieve of "Branxholme Braes" and their grandaughter Doris Grieve married my Ballantyne Uncle in NZ Also ancestor to Ann Mee and Dorothy Foster I have connected the families and now have them all down on the computer. A Dorothy Foster wrote to me and said that William Glendinning who married Mary Elliot was a brother of Adam Glendinng whose daughter married John Grieve. Things are coming together nicely Look forward to your reply Alison ----- Original Message ----- From: "roygraham" <roygraham@perkins9617.freeserve.co.uk> To: <SCT-ROXBURGH-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, December 13, 2004 1:37 PM Subject: Re: [SCT-ROX] CASTLETON FAMILIES > Hi Alison, > > I'm a little puzzled by your notes about the Ninian Elliots.
