My TURNBULL ancestors lived in Jedburgh, Hawick & Hobkirk until 1820 when they emmigrated to America. The parents of this Turnbull family were THOMAS TURNBULL [b. Hawick c1764; died Jedburgh c1814] and SARAH WOOD [b. Hawick 1774; died Rossie, NY, USA 1834]. They had 13 children born in Scotland; nine survived. In 1820, the widowed mother Sarah brought her 9 unmarried children [aged 28 thru 7] to America....the children's names were: Mary, Isabella, Thomas, William, Adam, Sarah, Janet, Michael [my gggrandfather] and Andrew. The family lines of these 9 children have been traced from 1820 to the present time here in the USA and Canada. I know very little about the early Scottish ancestors of THOMAS TURNBULL except what is written about him/them in "Rulewater and it's People" by Tancread. THOMAS TURNBULL was one of 6 children: Adam, William, Michael, THOMAS, Isabella & Mary. Their father was a Thomas Turnbull [b.c1720's], a weaver at Tarsetfoot in Northumberland and died in his "100th" year [possibly c1820]. Thomas' father was Adam Turnbull [probably b.in the late 1600's] of Deneysyde [or Nether Hawthornside], apparently a Turnbull lairdship until 1715 when ownership was given up, by seizure, to Sir Gilbert Elliott of Stobs. Does anyone have any connection to, or knowledge of, these TURNBULLS from Roxburghshire that are mentioned in Tancread's "Rulewater and it's People" [pgs. 258-261]? I need help to connect to my earlier ancestors before they emmigrated in 1820. I would be grateful for any info or suggestions and will be happy to share the Turnbull info that I have.
