Hi George Have we been in touch before. I know I was talking to someone about AITKENS but can't find my previous messages. I have a James AITKEN born Aug 30th, 1856, in Lanarkshire, to a Robert AITKEN and Mary TURNER. So he's of the right age. I have no information on his descendants if any. Interesting though, that the message you received from Marion with an AITKEN family in the 1881 census, this James and Ann have a son Archibald. Mary TURNER's grandfather was an Archibald. Does this look like your family in the 1881 census? Mary TURNER was living in Hawick in the 1881 census. She was Mary RODDEN at this time, remarried.
