Hi David: In response to your question "Who was the John Murdoch married to Margaret Mitchelhill?" I wish I had some answers but this is what I found to date: John MURDOCH - his death, I am not sure. Based on the death certificate of his son Thomas who died in Gordon, Berwickshire, October 15, 1857 - John MURDOCH and Margaret MITCHELHILL were deceased. Also on 1841 census, I found some of the family - Margaret and some of the children but no John. So I assume he may have died before 1841. I have listed the census below. As to his parents, I am not sure. Right now, this is all guess work. However, I did find a John Murdoch listed in IGI - JOHN MURDOCH, Christening: 17 OCT 1785, Kelso, Roxburgh, Scotland, Father: WILLIAM MURDOCH, Mother: MARGARET. This is the only John Murdoch that I could find born in the right timeframe in this region. Also found two other possible siblings - born to John MURDOCH and a Margaret WRIGHT - however born in Berwickshire. MURDOCH, Alexander, Male Christening Date: 30 Jul 1787 Recorded in: Eccles, Berwickshire, Scotland, Father: William Robert MURDOCH, Mother: Margaret WRIGHT - British Isles Vital Records Index - Disk 8. and MURDOCH, Margaret, Female, Christening: 12 JUL 1789 Eccles, Berwick, Scotland, Father: WILLIAM MURDOCH, Mother: MARGARET WRIGHT - IGI I also found a marriage of a William Murdoch to unknown bride in the IGI - WILLIAM MURDOCH, 05 AUG 1784 Makerston, Roxburgh, Scotland. The date of the marriage fits in with the birth of John a year or so later. However all still guess work. I hope this helps!
