Judy Hi There are 32 parishes within Roxburghshire which appear to be based on the larger towns in the county. (Roy can probably correct me if I'm wrong on this. As being in Australia I only work from maps) They are: Ancrum, Ashkirk, Bedrule, Bowden, Castleton, Cavers, Crailing, Eckford, Ednam, Hawick, Hobkirk, Hounam, Jedburgh, Kelso, Kirkton, Lilliesleaf, Linton, Makerstoun, Maxton, Melrose (which includes the quod sacra parish of Ladhope (the part of Galashiels the is Roxburghshire, other part in the County of Selkirkshire), Minto, Morebattle, Oxnam, Roxburgh, St Boswells, Smailholm, Southdean, Sprouston, Stitchel, Teviothead, Wilton and Yeltholm. One of the things with census is that boundaries change and you have Towns like Roberton which are included in the Selkirkshire county. Newcastleton is in the parish of Castleton. For any other towns within the parishes that are not listed above I suggest that you check out Genuki page for Roxburghshire at http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/ROX/ Jan Hall ----- Original Message ----- From: "Judy Dawe" <dawejudy@charter.net> To: "Jan Hall" <jhall5@vtown.com.au>; <BORDER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 16, 2004 2:09 AM Subject: Re: [BORDER] Update of 1841 FreeCEN Scottish Census transcription project > Jan, thanks for the web site. Thanks, Jan. I forget what a great information tool we have with GENUKI. Plus I so enjoy conversing with everyone on the list. When I looked at the census, I wasn't sure where to start since Newcastleton shows to be larger than the village of Castleton. What map did you look at? Some I have seen aren't very clear. Judy Dawe
