A week ago Joan Robblee wrote about a William Murdoch / Murdie born in Linton in 1813 to John Murdoch and Margaret Mitchelhill. I have Murdochs and Murdies born in the late 1790s and early 1800s in Linton to Andrew Murdoch / Murdie and Isabel Culbertson. They had a son, John, born in 1798 but he was too young to be having a son William in 1813. (Andrew and Isabel's children born up to 1804 were christened Murdoch and from 1805 they were christened Murdie. "Why the change?" I hear you ask! Because the minister of Linton Church changed in 1804/5 and the entries thereafter only gave the family name as Murdie - and omitted any reference to Isabel!) My question is "Who was the John Murdoch married to Margaret Mitchelhill?" Does anybody know when he died and so we might be able to find his parents' names? Oh, and by the way, the IGI entry shows the mother's name as Mitchel in the case of William being born in Linton but when his siblings were born / christened in Sprouston, Morebattle and Maxton the mother's surname was Mitchelhill. Another minor challenge for family historians! Any help would be much appreciated. David Richardson. Dr David Richardson, Holly Lodge, Penny Long Lane, Derby, DE22 1AX. UK.
