    1. Tracing Howieson's of Smailholm

    3. Hi I'm tracing the Howieson branch of my family tree. Margaret Howieson married James Henderson in Galashiels in 1872. Margaret was baptised at Smailholm in in 1948 and was the daughter of William Howieson and Euphemia Cochrane (married at Smailholm in 1840. Their other children were Alexander, George, Jane, Helen and there's a female child christened in 1857 who appears on the IGI index with no forename. William Howieson christened in 1814 and was the son of Alexander Howieson and Margaret Armstrong, who married in Smailholm in 1806. He had a brother, James, who was christened in 1813. That's as far as I've got. There seem to have been quite a few Howieson's in the area so it would be nice to compare notes with anyone else researching the same name. I've been able to search the censuses for 1881, 1891 and 1901 for these families but not further back, does anyone know if these are available online anywhere? Failing that would SKS be able to do a look up for me? I have a subscription to ancestry.co.uk and happy to do lookups on the 1891 census in return. I live in the Sheffield area and often visit the local archives, I'm happy to do lookup there too if anyone needs any. Thanks - Shelagh
