    3. In response to those who have responded to my recent registration/inquiry concerning my 18th century TURNBULL interest and connection to Roxburghshire, I offer the following......... My known TURNBULL ancestors were Thomas TURNBULL [b. Hawick c1764 d. Jedburgh c1814] and his wife Sarah WOOD [b. Hawick 1774 d. Rossie, NY 6/14/1834]. They had 13 children; 4 of whom died as infants or young children in Scotland. Research reveals that they resided in several towns; Hawick, Jedburgh, Hobkirk and Leith. Thomas Turnbull died in 1814. Six years later, on June 16, 1820, his widow Sarah Wood Turnbull and her surviving 9 children [ages 27 thru 7] left Leith, Scotland on the Brig. "Margaret" headed to Quebec City, Canada arriving on August 13, 1820. The family of 10 then traveled on the steamboat "Malsham" to Montreal and then by shallow draft Durham boat further up river to to their final destination, the "Scotch Settlement" of Rossie, NY, USA, a wilderness town near the St. Lawrence River which had only been settled a few years earlier by Scots in 1818. We have traced the family lines of Sarah & Thomas Turnbull's 9 children to the present day with over 3,000 names on our descendency charts. We call our research "The Turnbulls of Rossie, NY since 1820". We have very little information on this Thomas Turnbull family prior to their arrival in the USA in 1820. Based on Scottish Parish Church records of births & baptisms, this Thomas & Sarah Wood TURNBULL family apparently resided in Jedburgh c1790 thru c1800; Hobkirk c1800-c1810 and Leith c1810-c1814 - maybe thru 1820. Their 9 surviving children were named Mary (b.1792 Jedburgh), Isabella (b.1795 Jedburgh), Thomas (b.1797 Jedburgh), William (b.1802 Hobkirk), Adam (b.1803 Hobkirk), Sarah (b.1806 Hobkirk), Janet (b.1809 Hobkirk), Michael (b. 1810 Hobkirk) [my gg grandfather] and Andrew (b.1813 Leith). [Note the names of Thomas & Sarah Turnbull's children are the same as Thomas' siblings names.....see listed below.] We know very little about Thomas Turnbull's parents except for references in the book "Rulewater and it's People" by Tancread. On pages 258-261, Tancread tells about the TURNBULLS of Denesyde [or Nether Hawthornside], at one time a separate lairdship possessed by a family of Turnbulls; the last of which was an Adam Turnbull who in 1715 gave up his ownership, through seizure, to Sir Gilbert Elliott of Stobs. This event scattered this Turnbull family to places like Northumberland, Tarsetfoot and near Tyneside. Tancread points out that a Thomas Turnbull, probably a son of this Adam [of Denesyde], was a weaver at Tarsetfoot in Northumberland and died in his 100th year, leaving behind the following (6) children: (1) Adam Turnbull ( ? - ? ) - Was a shepherd at Tyneside. Later joined his brother William at the Grange Abbotrule estate which he leased 1823 and again in 1848. His 1st wife died at childbirth bearing twins. One child survived; Margaret c1805-1837. She had one daughter Isabella who lived at Denholm. His 2nd wife, Mary [daughter of a John Turnbull, farm servant at Stonedge had (3) Children: (1) Thomas 1812-1877; (2) John b. Old Foderlee 1818 d. Selkirk 1905; m. 1848 Jane Nichol and had 3 sons and 2 daughters; (3) Michael b. Foderlee 1821 d. 1894 at the old schoolhouse, Wolfelee. His wife, Beatrice Nichol & sister to John's wife, died a short time later in Selkirk. (2) William Turnbull (c1762-1842) - 1st of his family to return to Roxburghshire. He took the farm of Broombalks, near Camptownm as a tennant. In 1793, he and his wife Agnes Potts (c1761-1841) had a daughter Mary. The last farm he occupied was West Fodderlee until 1831 when he retired and spent the rest of his days at Bongate, Jedburgh. (3) Michael Turnbull ( ? - ? ) - Died young at Tyneside. (4) Thomas Turnbull (1764-1814) - According to Tancread, this Thomas at one time farmed Tandlaw near Hawick....and...."this branch of the family went to America." [I believe this Thomas is my 3G Grandfather who married Sarah Wood and is referred to in my 2nd paragraph above.] (5) Isabella Turnbull (1781-1857) - Married William Walker of East Fodderlee in 1821. She died in Jedburgh 10/26/1857. (6) Mary Turnbull ( ? - ? ) - Married Thomas Telfer. I live in the USA so I am not acquainted with the historical named places and farms described above. [I would be interested to learn where they are located.] I have only used those names to provide guidance to those who may be knowledgeable or familiar with this Roxburghshire Borders area and who may be able to direct me towards resources that would provide me with more information about my 17th & 18th century TURNBULL ancestors [before they left Scotland in 1820]. Should anyone be interested in our research of "The Turnbulls of Rossie, NY since 1820" I would be happy to assist them. Regards to all...... 3. I have a JOHN TURNBULL born 1846 in Blakelaw, Roxburgshire who married a Margaret HAMILTON at Linton in 1869. Their children were born in Edinburgh but the family went to Kansas.
