    3. The 7th Duke, born at Floors in 1839, would seem to be the best candidate for the trousers story. I think the 6th Duke was born about the same time as Benjamin. The first pair of trousers thing may refer to the boy being 'breeched'. I had a quick google and this might happen anytime after 3 or 4, sometimes up to 10 or 11 years old. Unlikely then that the Duke had his trewsers before 1841, so your man should be in Scotland at that date, probably leaving by 1845 when his son was born. It seems most likely that he would be in Kelso itself, which is not that huge, so that a search of the 1841 census film at an LDS centre shouldn't take more than a hour.
