    3. The last went pear shape Last week I spent a couple of days in Edinburgh Record Office, which was very fruitful only it gave me more headaches. I found my Gt. Gt. Gd Parents had thirteen children, four of which I knew nothing about. Talking to one of the staff just as I was leaving, they said I should have had a look on the Census but I did not have time. So if anyone has the 1861/1871 census for Roxburgh I would appreciated if they could take the time and look up the family below. it would be around Ashkirk, Kirkhope, or if they recognise any names Many Thanks Bob Born Married Date Married Andrew Elder 1819 Jane Stewart 1840 Robert 1840 Lillian Gunson 1860 Adam 1842 Agnes Hunter 1865 William 1845 Catherine Baptie 1873 Catherine 1848 Andrew Harvey 1871 Helen Hogg 1851 Died Spinster 1899 George Stewart 1852 Catherine Jardine James 18 Margaret Simpson 1897 Andrew 1856 Died 1862 Walter Grieve 1858 Elizabeth Stark 1879 Elizabeth 1862 Thomas Henderson 1882 Jane 1864 Died Spinster 1928 Agnes 1866 William Henderson 1909 Andrew 1869 Died Bachelor 1893

    3. Judy, I had written you Sept. 2 of this year regarding your message as listed above. My interest is in finding the parents, etc. of John Robson. I was told he was born in Roxburgh or Roxborough in 1799. Another time I was given the town of Newcastleton, which is in Castleton parish, I believe. What I wonder is if you had any background on your Robert Robson born 1740 in Morebattle regarding his family other than Helen (Ellen), his daughter. I believe she married into your WALDIE line. Do not know if you wrote back before, but I'd be interested in hearing from anyway. Thanks, Judy Dawe, Saginaw, MI

    3. Good morning George & Claire, Don't spend money looking for Marine Deaths on "Scotland's People " - they aint there ! "Minor Records - Marine Deaths " have not yet been digitised. I was in New Register House yesterday researching men lost at sea and their details can only be accessed through using the fiche - with no print out facility. I understand, unofficialy, there are no plans to have these on line in the near future. Regards. John. John D. Stevenson, Trinity Research Services, Scottish Maritime History Research. 1. Query
    2. John do you think it would be possable for James AITKIN to join the Navy?. In the 1881 census it says he is married with two children. The census says he is aged 34 but it should be 24.Maybe they got called up at that age. George

    1. Death
    2. I am looking for the death of a James AITKIN, maybe i have found it with Scotlands people, but i am not sure.It says he died in 1890 at the age of 32. What has me puzzled is that the district is Marine Register and the county is Minor Records, could anyone please explain this to me. There is no image to see and i wouldnt like to spend £10, which could be the wrong cert. George

    1. More TURNBULLs
    2. FIELD Keith
    3. I saw the recent postings concerning TURNBULLs in Roxburghshire. I have a connection to a TURNBULL family in Lilliesleaf. John TURNBULL (b. 1791) married Ann BOA (b. 1788), and they had one child born in Lilliesleaf (John, b. 1814) before emigrating to Montreal, Canada. John's sister Janet TURNBULL (b. 1795) married Ann's brother Robert BOA (b. 1796 in Holydean) and they too emigrated to Montreal. They apparently had two children born in Scotland before emigrating, but the baptismal records have not been found. Their youngest sister Helen TURNBULL (b. 1799) also emigrated, and married William GRAY in Montreal in 1820. Both TURNBULL-BOA families were in Canada by 1816. The parish registers of Lilliesleaf show the parents of John, Janet and Helen TURNBULL as John TURNBULL and Euphemia TURNBULL, and one family story suggests they were first cousins, but I have not succeeded in identifying the earlier generations. The registers show a family of ten for this couple, but I have not traced the other seven children. I believe the two TURNBULL-BOA marriages were likely in Lilliesleaf, as they do not appear in the OPR records available through the LDS, and marriage records for Lilliesleaf do not begin until 1817, at least in the LDS database. Does anyone belong to this TURNBULL family, or have additional information about them? My connection, incidentally, is through Robert BOA and Janet TURNBULL, who were my GGGgrandparents. Keith in Montreal

    2. ROBERT TELFORD
    3. According to the "Dodgson Manuscript", Nanny TURNBULL, a native of Liddesdale Sct, married John TELFORD, of Bewcastle CUL at Haltwhistle, Northumberland in 1808. John was the s/o Thomas and Ann [ROUTLEDGE] TELFORD of Bewcastle. Thomas was born about 1747 at Bewcastle to Thomas and Mary [LINDSEY] TELFORD of Scotland. Thomas Sr supposedly was the brother of John TELFORD and the uncle of Thomas TELFORD of DMF. Thus, John and Nanny possibly were 2nd cousins to Thomas TELFORD. I will appreciate any info about this possible connection. Robert Telford

    1. TURNBULLS
    2. Graeme Boocock
    3. I'll post this slightly out-of-district reference to Turnbulls only because there has been mention of Turnbulls in Edinburgh, and because there are links to Roxburgh in subsequent generations. James TURNBULL was the first husband of my ancestor Helen Vair m: July 14, 1783 at Edinburgh Parish. They had three children, including Margaret Anderson Turnbull b: 1784, Jean Turnbull b: 1785, and William Turnbull b: 1787. I don't know much about the children after that. James must have died prior to 1797 as Helen Vair remarried my direct ancestor (Alexander Ferrie) in that year. Their granddaughter (not a Turnbull) strangely moved to Kelso from 1847-1861 and baptised several children there before returning to Edinburgh. Graeme Toronto, Canada.
