I see I didn't make the list. Just subscribed yesterday. I'm looking for information about my gt. grandfather John Telford born 1812 or close to that. The basic information I have is just that but believe he was born in Scotland, possibly Dumfries area, possibly also Ewes specifically. From naming pattern for a son I believe this may be also true. gf Christopher Telford, f. George Telford/Anne Graham. There just doesn't seem to be anything to be found about him. I found a John-George-Christopher combinatiion mentioned in the IGI and it indicated that John had married and had a son John. This fits because a mysterious "Jack" seems to always be in the vicinity of John. My John surfaces in 1856 with an infant son George Christopher born in October, 1856. Possibly New York state or Perth, Ontario as birth place. John married Sarah Postlethwaite in Canada in 1857 and from there on his life is documented. He moved to othe United States in 1871. G.C. my g father said he was born in Syracuse, New York, but also said he was born in Canada. Some mail received from Dumfries in 1940's supposedly from relatives seems to make a connection with that area. If anyone has even a guess as to these people please respond. I would not mind if it was a private response, I have very limited internet time and so cannot stay online very long. My parents would not talk about ancestry but dad was fascinated by Scottish history and admitted ties with that country. So far anything beyone 1857 is murky. Barbara

Hi Don- The Scotch and Irish Naming Patterns are much the same. SONS: 1st son was named after the father's father 2nd son " mother's father 3rd son " father DAUGHTERS: 1st dtr was named after the mother's mother 2nd dtr " father's mother 3rd dtr " mother This pattern is not set in stone. Sometime some switches are made. Following the 1st sons in my family, we have: James b 1800 s/o William ( this is the William in question) William b 1826 s/o James James b 1853 s/o William William b 1857 s/o William ( 2nd son ---James died as an infant) Thomas b 1890 s/o William( Thos was 1st son but named after mother's father; 1st dtr Sarah named after father's mother[ a switch]; 2nd son William named after father's father.) Note; a 3rd son was named James after the father's deceased older brother. I believe, then, tat my ggggf William's father was probably named James. Clear as Mud! Dear List, I am hopeful that SKS is familiar with the TELFER Family [TELFOORD, TELFORD] of 18th Century Southdean. My ggggf, William TELFORD, lived in Cumberland and married Mary BOOTHMAN at St Cuthberts, Carlisle, in 1797. However, I have been unable to locate reasonable Baptism Records for my William in Cumberland and believe that he might have been born in Scotland. My TELFORD line followed the naming pattern for many generations. I believe, therefore, that Williams' father was called James. As IGI lists very few William TELFORDs born about 1770, who were sons of James, I feel that chances are reasonably favorable for finding a connection. About 1730, a James TELFER s/o John was born in Jedburgh. James married Helen MIDLEMIST about 1760 in Southdean. IGI shows they had the following sons born in Southdean: John------1761 and 1763 Andrew--- 1761 Gilbert---- 1766 Robert---- 1770 William-----1773 Except for Robert, I feel that the Telfers emigrated from Southdean --possibly to Cumberland. I will appreciate any info on this family and any data on descendants. Thanks much. Robert Telford

As an aside, I thought I would tell those of you with scots heritage out there of my 13 year old son, whom despite being a 6th generation Australian will proudly be attending the Scotland vs USA game in Brisbane in October in his Scots rugby jumper and our recently received the family tartan. He's never been to Scotland and does a truly terrible scots accent, but proudly boasts of his scots heritage. In fact in a cupboard full of Queensland, Australian, School & Club rugby jumpers, the only two that don't match the pattern are his Scotland short and long sleeve playing strips. What's even more interesting as I was explaining to him was that his GGGG grandfather was born at Markle - where legend has it the Scots Flag found its origin. It is the only non Australian game he is going too, and when asked by a friend of mine why, he said, "because it will be fantastic to watch Scotland kick the US *&%$" . we may be a long way away, but we never forget our roots. Elspeth Black MENZIES - this lady was my paternal G/Grandmother from Hawick. She, my father, (uncle) James Menzies & his wife Christine emigrated to Australia in 1939. Another piece of family history is that my other g/uncle Thomas Menzies (Jame's brother) ran against Abrahams (Abrahams was in Chariots of Fire). Thought I would add this to my other info.
