Hi List Is there a reason I have not received any messages for days? Faith
Hi All, Where did you all go? Will you come back? Have I offended you all? Has someone else? More seriously has anyone heard anything of Alison DeCaen, she left the list a few weeks ago which was not in itself unusual, but now her e-mail account appears to be closed down. Has anyone been in contact? Regards Roy
I am going through saved Clendenin emails. I was speaking of the son of William who went to Ireland in 1745ish we think. Now the problem exists that there are 2 Williams-one who was in Ireland and one who came there ... so have 2 different wives.. we thought that one guy married twice. Charles and several brothers came to America and settled Charleston, WV - well, Virginia at the time. We've touched base since this email and you sent me your family tree beginning in 1715 with an Adam-this goes on back to Adam Glendonwyn does it? Black Douglas connection and Robert the Bruce?
Have been reading this thread with great interest. I have been trying to find Hilenor Beattie for years with no success -- but I do have a Nelly Beattie (nee Renwick) in Kirndean. Could she be my Hilenor???? Peter NZ
Peter, It's real possible this is your Nelly, as I have an Eleanore Armstrong Rutherford, who went by the name of Helen. Hi Bob, As names Helen and Nellie are interchangeable, so it's probably the same person. It would be great if you could find out more about Glendennings/Clendenin. I am reading The Steel Bonnets by George MacDonald Fraser. The Johnstones, Elliots.Armstrongs, Grahams all involved in the borders-warring and reiving. Georganne Clendenin Cumming, GA
Hello; Mossburnforsd is a camping and caravan park just off the A68 Newcastle to Edinburgh Road, south of Jedburgh, near Camptown. As has been said there are few houses there, so I would not call it a village. My ancestors lived near there at Kersheugh, near to Fernirehirst Castle. How it came to be called Mossburnford I do not know but therew is a ford there over the River Jed. No but I guess there is a chance the great man is in the 1881 census! It might well show how many people he employed. Judy, On the 1851 census there were 8 families living there plus one at the sawmill. I can let you have details if you want. Pat
Suzi, According to my 1860ish Ordnance survey map of the area, Mossburnford had about four buildings in it. Thus it is a very tiny hamlet at best. I expect to be in the area next spring. It is a small settlement just down the Jed from Jedburgh itself. There is a caravan park there now and a couple of old houses on the other side of the water. Not much else as far as I know but I stand to be corrected. Perhaps there were more houses there once. I am pretty sure there are pics of the old houses somewhere, possibly on the web - it was a mill or a woodcutters or something like that.
