Hi Robert, You wrote: " I understand that 30 yrs later Sir Walter Scott first took a wheeled cart into Liddlesdale." I'm afraid that this is a piece of 'Scott mythology'. Firstly it wasn't a cart but a carriage, there's a considerable difference. Carts were in everyday use 'all o'er the bit'. Secondly the Selgovae were using chariots in Liddesdale before the Romans arrived!! Roy- I came across some old notes that might be informative. I was trying to trace the travels of my ancestors from Quebec, CA to NY City. George [1728-1813] and Margaret [1725-1807] TELFORD were married in 1756 and journeyed from Castleton, SCT, in Liddlesdale, in May 1772 with 5 small children. They emigrated with their friends and neighbors, the BELLs and BLAKEs, by horseback along the riverbeds and pathways. I understand that 30 yrs later Sir Walter Scott first took a wheeled cart into Liddlesdale. After they reached the port of NY they traveled up the Hudson River and settled in the Salem [Washington Co] area. Their youngest son Francis died in 1773. They had two additional children born in NY. They led an interesting life during the Revolutionary War and Margaret got in trouble with fellow church goers when she was accused of being a witch. Tho' she was exonerated, many of her narrow- minded neighbors made her life miserable for many years. Roy, this is what happened! Robert Telford Melbourne, FL

Does anyone have access to the 1861 census for Hawick? I am looking for Andrew Smith (or Deans) - age 28 - born Roberton his wife Elizabeth ms Murray - age 33 - born Hawick in 1855 he lived at Dickson Street, Hawick If there is an 1851 census available I would appreciate a look there too! If this isn't possible can anyone tell me where I can search myself? Many thanks Carol
I have family, Young, Hall, Tennant, who left this area in the late 1828's and settled in Chateauguay, Quebec. They are found in North Georgetown. I have located their graves and the names of their children. In the case of the Young family I amazingly found one who lives nearby in California. I am assuming it was the economy or the desire for land that caused them to leave but am curious to know how they knew what would be waiting for them, where they left from and where they landed. If you find any information, I would be interested. Hi there, Here is the URL for the site: http://www.scan.org.uk/index.html When the page comes up, you will notice the words "Key Navigation Area" in the top right hand side. Click this and a menu drops down which includes "Virtual Vault". Once in Virtual Vault, you'll discover "Military Records" in a list on the left-hand side - included in these are the "Roxburghshire Lieutenancy Books". There are other goodies to view as well - although not connected with Roxburghshire. Yours, Christine Okay Beth I just had another go and I received the same message. then I went back to my Bookmarks and this took me to the site. In Google type in"Roxburgh Lieutenancy Books" up will come a list of sites. I clicked on the first one Virtual Vault and was back in. Also on this page there are others including Genuki so you may also be able to assess it from those as well. Hi Roy - I am still searching for ancestors in the Borders area most especially Andrew Scott b <1777> of Melrose & Gattonside. I would like to know when & where he died & who his parents were. His spouse was Joan Hope b <l777> d 1855 bur at Linton Cemetery per her death record where she is listed as a widow. There is no stone for her. There is a stone for her parents James Hope 1730-1806 & Margaret Turnbull <1739>- 1807 at the lovely Linton cemetery adjacent to Linton Kirk (near Morebattle). A friendly Scotsman has sent me great photos of the area. Last summer I was fortunate to have a wonderful trip to beautiful Scotland. My daughter & I visited Edinburgh & several towns in the Borders including Melrose, Morebattle, Linton & Selkirk. It was a real thrill to be there & to visit gravesites of some of our ancestors. I had hoped to find ancestor Andrew Scott's grave at Melrose but he wasn't there. Does anyone on the list have any suggestion as to where I might find him? Joan Fraser San Mateo, CA, USA
Hi Roy, I'm still here............hoping for someone to pop up who might have a connection to my Hawick, Cavers or Kirkton families: Gray, Aitkin or Blakie (ca. 1750-1830). Does anyone have ancestors who migrated from Roxburghshire to Huntingdon or Chateauguay Co., Quebec, Canada? FYI, I did not receive mail from the list for some time. Ruth Sanders > >
Hi Barb, Thanks for the reply. There is a 'High Crindledike' at OSGB NY382 604. Also a 'NY 375 605. I'm also advised that there is a 'Crindledike House' in Rockcliffe. There are seven listings for 'Rosetrees' in the 1851 Census for Kirk Andrews on Esk, ( near Longtown in the 1851 Census, one occupant describes himself as a cottager, so it sounds like a row of cottages. But that's as far as I've got I'm afraid. My thanks to the Cumberland list for much of this information. Hi Roy I haven't received any mail from this List for ages and posted a message - it seems to have floated off into the deep blue yonder. However reading Rootsweb newsletter it appears a List is down - could that be us? Found a fascinating site with the Lieutenancy Books for Roxburgh 1797-1802. The actual pages come up on your screen. The schoolmasters had to send a list of all men in their area so they could be balloted into the Army. You can print off your pages of interest and it is free. http://www.scan.org.uk/VirtualVault/Borders. Faith Bay of Islands N.Z.
