    3. Faith sorry I haven't replied sooner, technical problems. My conections are Jane Stenhouse b 1849 daughter of William Stenhoue and Jane Davidson who married James Veitch son of George Veitch and Margaret Cockburn who were married May 6 1853 in Hutton Parish Berwickshire. I have an Elizabeth Stenhouse born in 1855 but to my knowledge she remained unmarried. I have Helen Baptie who married James Nichol in 1802 in Yarrow. If these are of interest please get back in touch Margaret Yarrow We seem to have combinations of the same names but different people. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Faith Stanners" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, November 26, 2003 10:44 PM Subject: Re: Fw: [SCT-ROX] MITCHELL VEITCH NICHOL > Sorry Margaret > > Checked your other names and also found the following: > > Andrew MITCHEL married Euphemia STENHOUSE > VEITCH married Elizabeth STENHOUSE > also way back abt 1600 have a Mary NICOLE marrying a Gawin STANEHOUSE. > > If any of these are who you are searching for have further information > > Faith > Bay of Islands > N.Z. > > > > ==== SCT-ROXBURGH Mailing List ==== > If you're interested in the Border area have you considered joining our 'sister-list' SCT-BERWICK ? > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 > >

    3. The 7th Duke, born at Floors in 1839, would seem to be the best candidate for the trousers story. I think the 6th Duke was born about the same time as Benjamin. The first pair of trousers thing may refer to the boy being 'breeched'. I had a quick google and this might happen anytime after 3 or 4, sometimes up to 10 or 11 years old. Unlikely then that the Duke had his trewsers before 1841, so your man should be in Scotland at that date, probably leaving by 1845 when his son was born. It seems most likely that he would be in Kelso itself, which is not that huge, so that a search of the 1841 census film at an LDS centre shouldn't take more than a hour. 2. The National Archives of Scotland have a good website where you can find a bit about what archives they have on the Roxburgh Estate - so you could take a look there before you may decide to visit Edinburgh. However, I suspect you may find lots of "loose bundles" of papers - i.e. all sorts of letters, bills and the like that would take an enormous amount of (possibly wasted) time to sift through. If you know (or suspect) where he was in 1841 you could try the census for more info (and the later decennial censuses)? I am searching for a Benjamin ROBERTSON (c1819 Scotland -late 1880s) who was a tailor and supposed to have been the tailor for the Duke of Roxburgh. He is also supposedly to have made the first pair of trousers for the Duke but this is all family lore. Eventually Benjamin and his family (wife unknown, son Robert and daughter Cecilia) settled in London in 1850-1860s. Benjamin is found in the 1881 census living (as a widower) with son Robert while Cecilia is married to Samuel Buston. I have contacted Floors Castle and they inform me that Roxburgh papers are held in the National Register of Archives (Scotland) but unfortunately living in Kent, these are not easily accessible. 3. Hello Faith What timescale are we looking at here? I have a missing Andrew MITCHELL, all I know is really is that he was the brother of my ggg grandfather James MITCHELL, supposed to have been from Kelso. they had another brother called Thomas (there were a couple of Thomas MITCHELLs in Kelso around the same date he, (andrew) had a daughter who is 'buried at Repentance Tower' nr Hoddam the family had strong links with the Annan and Hoddam areas James's children were born between 1830 and 1840 WILKIE was used as a middle name for one daughter. So Andrew MITCHELL was most likely born some time around the turn of the 18th to 19thCs. not much to go on I know.
