Dear Kate, The 1851 census for barrhead and neilston is on line. I dont uses urls, use Google and put in Neilston and census. There is a McCormack family headed by a David (sic?) with a 16 year old Thomas and eight other siblings. It sounds like it may be the family you are looking for.
