If you had strange parents who called you Dolomite, you might prefer Dolly. Not that a Scottish parent would ever do such a thing! :-) Sometimes a name someone wants to be called by has no relation whatever to their official name--they just like it better. It wasn't Margaret, Sarah or Catherine - these were her sisters. Her mother was Agnes. Maybe it was just a nickname in it's own right.
