    3. Hi Mary, I have found that they usually did mark (dec) on the certificates. But I do have a few where I know positively that someone was dead (I have their death certificate) and (dec) doesn't appear. I usually take the info given as a starting point....it may or may not pan out, but it is a start. Isn't that the case in all family tree researching? Happy Hunting!     3. There is no rule about it - It depended entirely on whether the information was proffered, or the clergyman/registrar thought to ask.
