Can anyone tell me if it is usual for scottish widows > to revert to their maiden name? > Thankyou > Mary Campbell This has been discussed several times recently on several of the Scottish Lists. A simple answer is that widows did not "revert" to their maiden name. In fact, they usually did not ever cease to use it - they continued to use their own name throughout the marriage and after (although they may have been known in legal documents by their husband's name as well - but this was often only amongst those families with "pretensions"). I have received a marriage certificate where under three of the parents names it has 'decs'. I am assuming that this means deceased. My question for the list is - would writing this on the certificate be common practice everywhere? I have my gt.grandfathers marriage certificate and this is not on it but I was almost positive his father was dead when he married. Does anyone know anything about this?
