As a newcomer to the list, can anyone please help with my brickwall? My gggrandfather James DAVIDSON was born ca. 1812. From James's marriage certificate, I know his father's name was George, a blacksmith, but I don't have his mother's name. It's possible that James was born in Greenoock or that the family moved from Aberdeenshire when James was small. (I'm posting this query on the Aberdeen list as well.) There's a family story that George ended up as an engineer on the steam ferries to Ireland. James moved south to Bristol by 1841 & on to Swindon (Wiltshire) in the late 1840s where he worked as an engineer/fitter in the GWR works. I have a few possible James-son-of-George baptisms from the OPRs for NE Scotland (although none for Renfrew) but I've no way at present of pinning down the right one. So, does anyone have a George DAVIDSON, blacksmith/engineer born say 1770-90? Pete Davidson (from Suffolk)
