My McGillvrays (sp?) - Donald, wf and 2 kids abt 10 & 7 - lived at 38 or 58 Lynedock St, Greenock around 1881-1891, and for sure in Feb. '89 (family letter), before leaving for Ontario. Don's brother Malcolm and others may have lived with them. I especially want the names of Don's wife & kids. Can anyone help me identify the parish and then search the records? Post office records? Other sources? Hi 1881 - 1891 ...birth certs for the children will be on scotlandspeople.gov.uk and each birth cert should have the date and place of the parents' marriage. Any surviving post 1855 volumes of parish records will be held at the National Archives of Scotland in Edinburgh. These are available for consultation by personal callers (possibly having to be pre-ordered 48 hours in advance) But why would someone want to trawl through register when Scotlandspeople has indexes? If you think that you will be unable to pick out your McGillvrays among many then you should pay an Edinburgh based researcher to search for you...although picking out McGs in Greenock in a 10 year span .....it's a moot point which would be cheaper. I'm afraid there is no way of doing this research for free .... but it could be worse ...in England it'd cost 7 pounds per certificate! Irene
Thanks alot Irene. I haven't ventured into <scotlandspeople.gov.uk> because I thought it would be just an index of names & locations. Just didn't know if it would be worth it. You are saying it would produce more data than I could find on the free webs? - Karen > In a message dated 15/11/2006 23:24:06 GMT Standard Time, > [email protected] > writes: > I'm trying another angle - possible parish records.
