Hi Listers, I am new to this list so please bear with me. I am searching for the birth or christening of Thomas McDonald b1856c. On his marriage certificate ,1883, here in New Zealand, he states his parents were Neil McDonald & Marion Auld & that he was born Barrhead, Scotland, 1856. I have been searching for his birth, & the ship he immigrated to N.Z. on for the last 5 years without success. I found Neil & Marion with four children, but no Thomas. Thought that he could have been a nephew adopted by the family but this does not explain why I can not find his birth. Can anyone please advise as sometimes you just can not see the wood for the trees. Regards, Denise J, New Zealand.
Hello Denise, There is a family in Barrhead in 1861 census which looks like yours. Neil McDonald age 35, daughter Isabella age 10, son Thomas age 7 and daughter Catherine age 4. The mother was not included, maybe she was away visiting someone at that time. It may be worth trying to check 1871 census if anyone has access to it Good luck and keep searching Johan Lochridge Researching Keith, Sharp, McKay, Carswell. Hi: I was just in Guadalajara, Mexico and saw a tombstone in the oldest cemetery dedicated to Joseph Johnston (b. 1832 in Paisley, Scotland) and his wife Jean Young (b. 1838 in Paisley, Scotland). They both died in 1896 - he died in May and she died in September. Is anyone researching the Johnston family? If so - I'd love to send a photo of the headstone - there's a fascinating story connected to the Johnston couple. Heather Hess (Canada) Cualli Tonalli! Thank you so much Johan. I searched all the census for Scotland using Ancestry but got no results, so think it would be best to order in films through the LDS centre. You've renewed my enthusiasm, I'm most gratefull.
