Hello Everyone; This is my first post to your list. Genealogy is something that I'm learning as I go along. I'm seeking information on my grandfather, Thomas Elder, born abt mid 1890, in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland ( I think?) I am sorry to say that I don't have an exact date of birth. According to a family story he was a Seaman, one story goes he alone went over board & was lost, the other story is that the entire ship went down & all on board lost. This was right around the start of WW2. Unfortunately I do not know the name of his ship. The information that I have at present is not very much, some of it I'm not to sure about, any help or advice will greatly appreciated. Kind regards, Terri Lynn Today well lived, makes everyday a dream of happiness, and every tomorrow a vision of hope. --------------------------------- Stay in the know. Pulse on the new Yahoo.com. Hello Terri Good luck in your quest. There are a number of sites you may find useful, one of which is Scotland's People. It is a pay site on which you can actually view and print out records since 1855 and order those beforehand. I would have expected to find a death like the one you describe in the Minor Records for Military or Shipping records, but instead I found someone who seems remarkably similar in some details - dying from some sort of accident in what appears to be a civil hospital in Kirkaldy, with the informant his son. I don't know how certain you are about the eafaring information on your Thomas Elder, but it wouldn't be the first time that the reality might be quite different from the stories passed down. Kirkaldy Fife 1942 Thomas Elder aged 52 male Linoleum worker married to Elizabeth Dawson September 5th Kirkaldy Hospital (time not clearly legible but something.33 p.m) parents Robert Stuart Elder, tailor and Christina Elder m.s. Haxton (Hapton? deceased cause: Extensive burns, 1 day shock, as cert. by Edward Whyte Informant L C (?) Elder, son. If you do think this could be your relative, then it would probably be worthwhile signing up with Scotland's People, as there is enough information for you to take the family further back from there. I couldn't resist checking this one out, and if you like I can send you the record off the list, but then you can have fun with the site yourself. As I say, it costs money, but nothing like the amount it would if you were to visit the GRO yourself or even order the records by mail. Living in Holland, we have found the website a boon and it has helped us open up a whole world of family history we never even dreamed of: www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk Good luck!
