    3. Hello List, Could anyone shed some light on the burial customs on the 1700 & 1800's in Renfrewshire. Many Carswells farmed & died in the Neilston district during this period but only a very few Carswell gravestones are found in the Neilston churchyard. Were they likely to be buried there without headstones or buried on their farms as can be the custom in rural Australia ?. With thanks , John Carswell. Interests ,Carswell Howie, Stevenson ,Gemmell, McKay,Kirkwood ,Craig, Young & Mitchell of Neilston.

    3. Hi John Gravestones have always been for the somewhat better off, there are far more buried without them than with. There are no doubt some buried on their own land but a tiny minority I would say. 3. Hello John I was wondering if you had an Archibald Carswell in your tree. He emigrated to Australia and married Margaret Lawson in 1886 settling west of Gympie to run a Jersey Stud. Archibald was born before Jan 1859 and his father was John. As you are also in Australia, I wondered if there's a connection.
