Hello; I am a newby to the list and researching the name NEWTON. My gt grandfather John Hall Newton came to NZ from Glasgow in 1884 and named his home, that of a former premier of NZ, in Wellington "Ravenshall" after a house "south of Glasgow". I wonder if any of the listers can recall a house of that name. Originally we believed that the name was from a family home in Yorkshire from whence John Halls father, Thomas Newton came, but on reading my mothers diaries recently she revealed that the name came from a house "south of Glasgow." The Newtons lived in and around the Gorbals in the mid to late 1800's. Thomas Newton had been an Ironfounder/moulder and John Hall Newton became a soap manufacturer both in Glasgow and in Scotland. JHN's brother in law Alexander WHITELAW was also a soap manufacturer and his older brother Thomas jnr was a brass founder near Gourock. I am trying to find this house! Many thanks, Katherine O'Regan nee Newton New Zealand.
