Isabel and others, My experience of the 1851 & 1861 census is that you can use all of Ancestry if you sign up for a free fourteen-day trial period. We tried that out on someone else's computer and, as Bonnie said, that turns up a list. When you click onto one of the names for the information, you are asked to sign in and make a new free account. Not everyone will be inclined to do so, but it might be worth your while if you have a number of searches ready to do and know roughly what you're looking for. Using our subscription, we checked out Daniel CAVAN and family although it was not clear to me when Agnes CAVAN would have been about ten: 41, 51 or 61. This entry below can be found in the 61 census. Could it be your family? Both parents were born in Ireland and William might have cast out on his own by then. Margt and Mary are sometimes mixed up and a move from Renfrewshire to Glasgow is quite possible. The occupations given for the girls are cotton framers and cotton throsters. I'm afraid I don't have time to report the exact information for all the members as you have to click on them one by one. I hope soon they'll have the originals on Ancestry, but for now, the transcribed info is all we have unless you go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk Daniel CAVAN 58 M b abt 1803 Head born Ireland spouse Mary Reg dist Milton, Civil Parish Glasgow Maryhill, Lanarkshire Address 15 Oakbank Street, occupation coal miner People at that address: Agnes CAVAN 18 b Linwood Daniel CAVAN 58 coal miner b Ireland Elizabeth CAVAN 16 b Linwood John CAVAN 13 iron moulder b Johnstone Renfrewshire Mary CAVAN 57 b Ireland Mary CAVAN 21 b Paisley Elizabeth CROOKIE 17 boarder b LKS Elonear O'NEAL 20 ditto The only obvious Daniel and William CAVAN in Kilbarchan are small sons of one Hugh aged 30 & Marjory CAVAN, iron miner, but they might well be related.
