Hi Bonnie, Apologies for the slow response. The Scottish 1881 census is available on C D Rom discs, and can be purchased as part of the English 1881 Census or is available in FH libraries. I found your Bell family there as follows. 1881 census: New Monkland, Lanark 6 Hallcraig St. GRO Ref 651-1 E.D. 18 Pg 4 Ann BELL Head Housekeeper Widow 45 Ireland John do Son Butcher Un. 25 Airdrie Annie do Dau. Nil 15 do William do Son Scholar 11 do Andrew do Son do 8 do Note Ann Bell is recorded as a Widow, and you have children born since 1861. To find the christening or birth of children go to www.familysearch.org I found two children there: Ann Bell, bn 1860 & Fanny in 1856 Both give the mother's maiden name. These were extracted from the parish records by volunteers. I'll leave the fun of checking them out to you. Hit the Batch number and put in your family name and, you will see there are quite a number of "Bells" in that area. New Momkland is close to Airdrie, if I remember right. Note with Fanny's information there is information submitted buy someone, possibly a descendant, giving more details about Fanny in the Pedigree Resource file. The mother's name is spelled differently. I'd go with the familysearch spelling as they were taken from the parish record. (which admittedly could have been given phonetically and been misspelled) Anyway, I hope this is helpful, Don. Wilson A.G. P.S. If I can help anyone else with look-ups on the Scottish 1881 Census, send me your info, but be prepared to be patient. :-)
