I am researching the parents of Alexander McArthur (1809-1885). I have parents names Alexander McArthur (farmer) and Margaret McFarlane on his 1885 death cert. From the OPRs, Alexander & Margaret married in Luss Dunbarton 1805, had six children in Dunbarton (1809 to 1822) and then one child in Greenock in 1825 (assuming the same couple moved to Greenock). I have a candidate couple in the Greenock East 1841 census Alexander labourer age 56 and Margaret age 58, both born outside the county, consistent with their origin as Dunbartonshire. Address is 48 Crawfordsdyke Main St. In 1851, I have a widow Margaret McArthur annuitant age 68 at Luss, Dunbarton. I have no further trace after that. There is no record of Alexander's death in the published Greenock BMD index. I have two questions that the list may be able to help with. 1. If Alexander died in Greenock, in which cemetery might he have been buried between 1841 and 1851? Without a newspaper record or date, do I have any chance of a finding a burial record, or headstone? 2. There are 16 households listed with the same address 48 Crawfordsdyke, Main St with labourers, and other manual occupations, mostly journeymen. I have had no success so far in tracing the exact whereabouts of Crawfordsdyke. Would this have been a tall tenement, or what other type of building might it have been to have 16 households? Regards Stuart
