Stuart, Alexander would have been buried in the Greenock Cemetery providing he died in Greenock and not in Luss. That being said, the burial records for the Greenock cemetery only go back to 1846 and his death may not have been published in the newspaper. You can contact the Greenock Cemetery here and they should be able to point you in the right direction: Burial Grounds Officer Greenock Crematorium 1 South Street Greenock PA16 8UG Phone (01475) 715658 Fax (01475) 730345 Crawfordsdyke was a industrious little place that you can find on a number of maps here http://www.nls.uk/maps/counties/index.html select Thompson's 1821 map of Renfrew, zoom in on Greenock. Wait a while, I tried accessing the site but it may be down. Yes there were tenements. Did you do a Google search for Crawfordsdyke? You may have a case where Alex/Margaret went back to Luss in their later years to be near family. Perhaps a family lair existed or he died in Greenock and was buried in Luss. In Luss they would have been buried in the cemetery next to the church. Today Luss falls under Argyll & Bute Council and you can contact the cemeteries here: Operational Services, Manse Brae, Lochgilphead. PA31 8RD Telephone: 01546 604666 I never ask for a MI I found of that era many didn't exist or survive but the interment record should. It seems that it depends on the day you call whether there was fee charged or not ;) Cheers!!! I have parents names Alexander McArthur (farmer) and Margaret McFarlane on his 1885 death cert. From the OPRs, Alexander & Margaret married in Luss Dunbarton 1805, had six children in Dunbarton (1809 to 1822) and then one child in Greenock in 1825 (assuming the same couple moved to Greenock). I have a candidate couple in the Greenock East 1841 census Alexander labourer age 56 and Margaret age 58, both born outside the county, consistent with their origin as Dunbartonshire. Address is 48 Crawfordsdyke Main St. In 1851, I have a widow Margaret McArthur annuitant age 68 at Luss, Dunbarton. I have no further trace after that. There is no record of Alexander's death in the published Greenock BMD index. I have two questions that the list may be able to help with. 1. If Alexander died in Greenock, in which cemetery might he have been buried between 1841 and 1851? Without a newspaper record or date, do I have any chance of a finding a burial record, or headstone? 2. There are 16 households listed with the same address 48 Crawfordsdyke, Main St with labourers, and other manual occupations, mostly journeymen. I have had no success so far in tracing the exact whereabouts of Crawfordsdyke. Would this have been a tall tenement, or what other type of building might it have been to have 16 households? Stuart, Six years ago I visited Greenock cemetery to try and locate death records for my family 1840s +. I was advised it was necessary for me to provide them with date of death/burial for each, which of course I didn't have. If their office had to do the search for me it was exceedingly expensive (unbelievable cost) for each single name. I understand from that conversation that their records would not probably become available on line, nor without first providing date of death/burial date because their recording system in the past was very labour intensive and because of the huge amount of burials over time in that particular cemetery. If anyone can throw some fresh light on the present situation I would very much appreciate hearing about it as I still haven't made any progress with this task. Thanks.
