Hello Katrina Intriguing story. What you don't mention is where you saw these references. Not being mathematical I haven't the slightest idea what the odds are on two Ann Winnings marrying two Hamiltons around the same time. Anything is possible, of course, but I imagine it could be equally possible that the sources you've seen simply quoted the wrong set of parents for Ann Winning. I've seen this sort of dubious entry in some secondary sources, such as the IGI, but I've not seen IGI data far beyond the middle of the nineteenth century, so you probably didn't see them there. Have you checked the marriages on Scotland's People or any even halfway similar source? >>>>>> 5 minutes later: OK, Katrina, since, as you say, it's a quirky story, I couldn't resist looking for myself. Not gone into it completely, but a search in the statutory records turns up two young ladies, one recorded as Ann, the other as Annie, marrying Hamiltons in the time frame...one Andrew and one Hugh, one in Lanark, the other in Renfrewshire. Had you seen the latter one? Two more points, Katrina, 1) The young lady who married Hugh HAMILTON in 1899 appears to have the same parents as Annie who married William BAXTER in 1901, i.e. Thomas WINNING & Annie SNEDDON. 2) I don''t know about the odds on two Annie WINNINGs, but I certainly had trouble with my great grandmother Mary McVean and her cousin by the same name, two years younger and born next door in Argyll and migrating to Renfrew and Lanark which, after all, are pretty close.
