Could anyone advise how I might access patient records for the Riccartsbar/Burgh Parochial Lunatic Asylum in Paisley Abbey, Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland for the years 1881 thru 1891. Eva Mitchell, Vancouver, Canada
Dear Eva I was able to obtain 19th century patient records for Govan Parochial Lunatic Asylum from the NHS (National Health Service) Greater Glasgow and Clyde Board Archives. www.archives.gla.ac.uk/gghb You need to complete a form on site in order to request the records. I don't know if the Paisley area will be covered by these archives, but, if not, they may be able to advise you. And don't expect too much. In my case they were able to give me a short account of why and when my two patients had been admitted to the Asylum but no patient case notes survived before about 1895.
