What do people think about McCALLUM as as an option? It seems the most logical being thrown open by OPR. There's also McARTHUR/McARTHOR but I can't help but think it is a long way removed from McCULL and McHOUAT....not that McCALLUM isn't either, but.... Thanks for the ideas John and Ken; they're added to my list. Kate > *McQue is another uncommon Scottish name . > > > > > > What about McQuat for McHouat? Kate I am now unsure whether you think that "Mchouat" is a wrong transcription of another name? But I googled McHouat and came across a 1791 Book Subscription List for Glasgow where two people are listed as bearing this name: a May Mchouat of Thornliebank, Glasgow and a Walter Mchouat of Dalmuir, Clydebank. (the book list is on Scottish Family Heritage at http://www.scottishfamilyheritage.co.uk/list_book1791glasgow.shtm . There are all sorts of 'Lists' on this site which may be of interest.). So, the name existed in Glasgow at the end of the 18th century. Thanks Rhoda, but it's more to do with the fact that the name appears to have changed over time. James Boag's (1793) mother is Margaret McCULL. At the time of his death in 1861 his mother is McCOLL. There are possible siblings of James BOAG with a Margaret different variants of McCULL. I can find a marriage for a James BOAG and Margaret McHOUAT in 1792. I'm having trouble with my current resources to locate a birth for a Margaret McHOUAT or variants in Renfrew, or anywhere. I need to do a census search for other McHouats that might live in the Abbey (Paisley) areas. I'll check out the web site. McQuat isn't too far from McHouat. And I've seen what we would now spell as Howat appearing as Houat in previous centuries. As we all know then they didn't bother too much about using the consistent spelling for their name. And, of course , there is Coull, though I've never seen McCoull. You seem to have plenty options...which doesn't help! Tom at do people think about McCALLUM as as an option? Of course, there is always McKeough and its variations. -----Original Message----- From: sct-renfrew-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:sct-renfrew-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Kate Dostalek Sent: Tuesday, 18 November 2008 4:17 PM To: sct-renfrew@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SCT-RENFREW] McWHAT?
