    3. Hello Kate I did a search on Scotlands People for records of births of Mchouats - either sex - between 1553 and 1854. There were 12 and the first was in 1706 in Killearn, Stirlingshire. 8 of the births were in Stirlingshire and the remaining 4 in Dunbarton and Glasgow. The last birth recorded (on Scotlands People) was in 1786 in Drymen, Stirlingshire. But, as you say, no record of a birth for a Margaret. The name appears to have died out in Scotland - there were no births of Mchouats recorded in Scotland between 1855 and 2006. There were however 59 records of births of Mcouats, before 1854, and 272 between 1855 and 2006. Some of the pre-1854 records were also in Stirlingshire. Not much help, but interesting. Makes you wonder where the name came from. Possibly a Lowland-Scottish interpretation of a Highland Gaelic name created when a Highlander settled in Stirlingshire at the end of the 17th century. Or perhaps it could be Irish in origin.......
