    3. Hello Frank in Ontario ... you wouldn't happen to have any ancestors from the Johnstone/Lochwinnoch area would you??? I have a list of McGunnigles and I'm wondering if this is just a variation of the same name? Brian in Ontario.

    3. Hi Brian Thanks for getting in touch, always good to hear from a McGonigal/McGunnigle etc. researcher Actually my gr.gr.grandfathers name was spelled McGunigal ( Hugh ) when he settled in Glasgow abt.1837. He said he was from Derry in the info that I've been able to collect over the years. Sarah Coyle was his wife and they had two children,Mary b.1837,and John b.1838,,,John went to Ohio with his family in 1874.....I've lost track of Mary There are MANY variations of the name because the enumerators wrote it down as they heard it pronounced. The name originated in Donegal, which is pronounced DUNegal by Irish people..hence McGunigal. Mac Conghail is the original Gaelic name. I don't have any info on any of my clan of McGonigals being in Lochwinnoch..but I do have DEWARs who settled there..one Peter Dewar,..my grandmothers cousin,.. had a grocers shop there in the early 1900s..some others emigrated to Toronto Ontario. I've had my Y DNA done and found more McGonigals ,and others who match but with different names ,but none turned out to be close relatives. Where does McGunnigle fit into your research > Back to You ! 3. I have a John McGunnigle marrying Elizabeth Kenney (Keanie) June 21 1872. Johns parents were John McGunnigle and Marjorie Davies or Davine. (Difficult to discern). I also show John and Elizabeth in the 1881 census for Main Street, Lochwinnoch with five children .... John, David, George, Peter and Rosanna. The surname in this case is McGinnigall. Elizabeth would be my Great Grand Aunt. I do actually remember my Grand Mother mentioning the name McGunnigle from time to time. 3. Doesn't look like there's any recent connection, but there probably is one, although many generations back. My gr.gr.grandfather may have had a brother John MeGunigal, that was the name of one of the Sponsors at Mary McGunigals Christening in 1837..the spelling then was McGonegale ! the other Sponsor was Ann McColl. If you get your research back to DERRY let me know. All the best Frank ~~~~~~~~~ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Brian Keanie" <tcameron1@sympatico.ca> To: <sct-renfrew@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 02, 2010 6:20 PM Subject: Re: [SCT-RENFREW] McGonigal >I have a John McGunnigle marrying Elizabeth Kenney (Keanie) June 21 1872. > Johns parents were John McGunnigle and Marjorie Davies or Davine. > (Difficult > to discern). > I also show John and Elizabeth in the 1881 census for Main Street, > Lochwinnoch with five children ....
