I have a family where there were several children in quick succession after marriage, then a 5 year gap and then 2 more children close together. The family moved from Port Glasgow to Hamilton some time in this gap, which is 1779 to 1784. The father of the family was a carpenter I wondered if perhaps he had been pressed into the Navy, explaining the gap in an otherwise fecund life and the move (so it didn't happen again!) My query is, does anyone know if press gangs operated in the Port Glasgow area at that time? I know I will only ever be thinking possibilities! Clare Abbott Oxford UK
