I have had a great time on SPeople but have a query after seeming to use a lot of credits and not getting far. I am trying to trace James ANDERSON who married Jean Munro Aug 1873 Glasgow. Jean had been living with John Harris who died 1872 and they had a child Janet Harris Munro b. 1870 Glasgow. James ANDERSON (died 1883 to 1917) and Jean Munro (she died 1917 Calton Glasgow) then had the following children all born Glasgow - Rebecca Anderson b. 1871 Mary Johnston Anderson b. 1874 (died young?) Margaret Anderson b. 1875 William Anderson b. 1877 Jessie Anderson 1881 John Anderson b. 1883 (all worked out from the 1881 census) In the 1881 census Rebecca is 10 yrs old, born Glasgow, yet I cannot find her on the Latter day saints site. Margaret is 6yrs, William is 4yrs, and Jessie is 3 yrs. It also names Jane Anderson, Daughter, 14 yrs old born Glasgow. Who is Jane - is this Janet Harris Munro? When the mother dies in 1917 the informant is her Son, John Munro at 212 Duke Street. A researcher gave me this years ago. Is he wrong and shud it be John Anderson not Munro. WHAT IS the best way to find out more about all of them. I would like to know if all of them married, and death of course. Anderson is I would think a common name so do I go for a census not knowing where in Glasgow, and also if a daughter marries, when she dies is she recorded as both married Surname and also under her Maiden name as a separate entry. Or am I better to try for death certificates but in maiden name or unknown married names. Would welcome some advice as seem to be going round and round. Thanks Colleen
Hello Colleen It might help you to find out more from the census index of as many years as possible if you are to have some chance of homing in on the right records on SP without spending so many credits. For example, the Ancestry index, though their transcription can be idiosyncratic to put it mildly. Hopefully, some of the family history societies may have CDs with BMDs etc which may be useful if you have a whole family in the area. And of course this is not the only Anderson family in Glasgow. Sometimes, if you're lucky, a daughter will be staying with her parents under her married name. The reason for this will not always be a happy one, but at this remove it can be handy for us. 1891 There's a James Anderson and wife Jeanie 46 with what sounds like a similar family in Tylefield Street Glasgow St Thomas in 1891, his age 57 and birthplace 'Edinbors, Edinboroshire'. hers 46 Paisley.. Daughters Rebaca (!) and Jessie are the right age, and there is a 4 year old James who would not have been around for the 1881. Could be them. Several other Rebeccas showing the married name staying with parents but wrong dad. No clear 1901 entry for the family seen yet but there is a Rebecca Anderson with husband and daughter Hendry who are not accounted for in the earlier census records with father. Might be worth considering even though the age is a little out - examples enough of women lopping years off their age to meet their younger husband. I'm afraid I can't look any further now but others on the list may be more helpful. There did seem to be someone by the name of Gregory with a tree containing what looked like this family. No guarantees though - or you may already be in touch.
