1851 Scottish census - I searched on Robert Templeton, Renfrewshire. Only 1 came up in Mearns, age 20, lodger at 34 Glen Street, occupation - block printer. This might be their son who was 10 in the 1841 census. When I search for Sarah or Flora in Renfrewshire, no match. Just doing a quick look, it would seem that the family disappeared from Renfrewshire, with the possible exception of the son. Marc, the only 2 ways I know of to look at the Scottish census records is on Ancestry (no images, data only) or on ScotlandsPeople (have to pay to see search results and have to pay to see images). I thank you for your explanations. It is indeed a blow to the ear. However I have since discovered that a similar sounding word: a Whitterick is a ferret, a Whitrat (pronounced Whitrit) is a weasel and a Whittock or Whittuik is a swallow in Lalland Scots. I have learned quite a few Scots wurds over the weekend! Best Wishes, Jane in sunny Penicuik

I had a look in my volume of "The Concise Scots Dictionary" published in 1985 by the Aberdeen University Press. This is a distillation of two major works - The Scottish National Dictionary and The Dictionary of the Older Scottish Tongue - which should be available in Reference Libraries. The word was not in my Concise volume but may be in one of the larger volumes. Michael: I have checked the Port Glasgow War Memorial and can find no William Ness listed. Although the Royal Marines get a mention, the mercantile marine (Merchant Navy) do not seem to be mentioned anywhere. Could he have been lost at sea, then? Incidentally, the largest numbers of casualties listed come from the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, with Royal Field Artillery and Royal Garrison Artillery close behind. Cameron Highlanders also figure prominently, as do the Kings Own Scottish Borderers, Gordon Highlanders and Royal Scots. Many other units also get a mention, including Highland Light Infantry, Black Watch, Seaforth Highlanders, Scottish Rifles, the Machine Gun Corps, Royal Engineers etc., so information from this source can be no more than a suggestion or an indication of a likelihood. Sorry. Hello Sandy I have LANGMUIRs as well but not that early. This is what I have: James LANGMUIR md Grace Lang LYLE Aug 1869 at Broomlands, Paisley. He was born Mar 1843 at Johnstone, Abbey. Their children were Grace Lang LANGMUIR Sep 1870; Janet LANGMUIR Apr 1872; Margaret 1874; Agnes 1876; Georgina 1885; Williamina 1890. Don't have parents of James LANGMUIR, Grace Lang LYLE's parents were George LYLE and Grace LANG and her ancestors in previous generation were James LANG, Grace JOHNSTON, William LYLE and Margaret POLLOCK. Saving for any unrecorded births that leaves Janet and Agnes as possible mother's to James LANGMUIR. It's possible that a connection will be found here. Does your early tree descend to any of these names? My only data for CRAIGs is Magdeline as earlier listed, but I would love to learn more. Michael: a Port Glasgow man might have joined the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, which regiment had a very active T.A. unit in neighboring Greenock, although there was possibly a Field Artillery unit in Port Glasgow. There used to be a T.A. hall in Higholm Street in Port Glasgow, so if you can get hold of an old local, he may be able to remember something.
