While the Greenock Newspaper BMD Index is completely dependent on family having had the announcements put into the newspaper, like anything, you never know what little gem might help you along. Thanks to my Beith family putting in the death of Hamilton Beith, we were finally able to figure out what happened to him. He disappeared from Scotland after the 1851 census. He had emigrated to Valparaiso, Chile and died there, the rest of his siblings had stayed in Scotland or gone to the USA, some of his cousins ended up in England. Of course, I'm looking forward to the index being added to, so I check my other family surnames. Julie
Hi Tim, and thanks for the info but, to be honest, I have no idea. I have explored the possibility that James CRAIG may be the father of Ann CRAIG, later BOAG. In the 1851 Census Ann BOAG (CRAIG) was born about 1799 in Kilmacolm. She died before civil registration so I can't confirm her parents. Ann CRAIG's daughter, Mary BOAG (1831) married John JAMIESON (1822) whose mother is Mary FULTON of Eaglesham. Mary FULTON's mother was Mary YOUNG and her father was John FULTON. I'm not sure if there is a connection between the FULTONs, CRAIGs and BOAGs, apart from the obvious. It could be pure coincidence that John JAMIESON ended up in the same area that his parents are from (he grew up in Dumfires), but then again he was a Commercial Traveller at the time of his death in 1879. John JAMIESON was a widower when he married Mary BOAG in 1856. (I say "area" but I have no idea about the location of Eaglesham to Abbey (Paisley)/Johnstone, and Kilmacolm........ It's all very confusing, complicated and convoluted. Seeking advice about a name variant and how I might find out how to work out what it might actually be: 1792 James BOOG married Margaret *McHOUAT*, in Neilson. Marriage reg says they are both of that Parish. 1793 James BOOG Christened, father James BOOG, mother Margaret *McCULL* 1861 James BOAG dies, father James BOAG, mother Margaret *McCOLL* ** Other variants of the name I have come across (e.g. brothers and sisters): *McCAIL, McCOAL, McKIL* I found a Margaret McNAUGHT born about 1870 but she didn't marry James BOOG. I've pondered the idea of McCARTHUR b 1766 after a "suggestion" from Scotland's People. Any ideas gratefully received. With all my Scottish heritage, this is the first Mc... I have come across! Thanks Kate in Australia
Julie, what a marvellous resource. Unfortunately I didn't find any of my direct Dunlop ancestors, although my gt.grand uncle Charles Tennant Dunlop was buried in Rosneath so comes within the geographical area (I think). However, I did find the wedding of his uncle Henry Dunlop of Craigton, and the death of his widow. Kate, I also have an interest in CRAIG and FULTON in Eaglesham. In the 1880's my great grandmother Jean Rankin Craig Millar (1834-1912) supposedly did some research on the Craigs in Eaglesham, back to Andrew Craig - father of James, Lilias, John, Andrew, and <Richard?>. Lilias may have married James Fulton o/a 30 April 1805 in Eaglesham. I'm descended from Lilias' brother James' son John Craig, father of Jean Rankin Craig Millar. Anything ring a bell? Hugh Longwill Cameron Millar ("Tim") -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My interest in the BOOGs or BOAGs of Abbey (Paisley), and FULTON (of Eaglesham), CRAIG, JAMIESON (of Eaglesham) and YOUNG:

Greetings I have Mary Boag listed I my wife's tree as being born about 1791 in Lesmahagow, Lanark, she married William Brown in Louden, Ayrshire 23rd June 1803, they had 3 children Jean b1804, Christina b1813 & Janet b1815. Christina married a Matthew Aird in 1836 and they had 12 children, she died in 1897. I have been away from the list for some period and I am fairly inactive with the family tree so I am unsure if I have any documented proff of these details or wether I got them from an online source. Hi again, The John BOWIE listed that married a Martha Allan in Abbey but living in Johnstone has his eldest son named John, after his father and himself and then the next eldest son is named Allan. Would this follow the naming patterns as such or not. The remainder of the children are girls. The other John Bowie's listed do not have anything close in the children's names. Hi List, I have been helped in the past by folks on this list and need further help now. I have several questions. Background: Allan Bowie appears in the 1841 census on Campbell Street in Johnstone with his family. I have them from there forward to the United States. I can only find one birth record for Allan Bowie on LDS website and Scotland's people that is the appropriate age and locality for my Allan. The parents listed are John Bowie and Jean Cunningham/Canningham. When doing a parent search at Family Search I come up with a brother, John, born 3-4 years earlier than my Allan. Now I am trying to connect this John to my Allan in the 1841 census but there appears to be several John Bowie's and I am not sure which is the correct one. One is 50 and probably too old for him; one is 40 and closer to his age and one is only 30 and probably too young. 1. Did they round up or down in the ages in the census? If so by 5 year intervals? Yet children appear to be more appropriately recorded to correct age? 2. Were all births registered in the OPR's? I have found Allan's birth on Scotland's people but not John's although it is recorded on Family Search. 3. John the brother appears to have married. There is one with an appropriate location, and close age, to a Martha Allan and I have the films listed but I don't think that they give much further information. I don't want to just assume that this is the one. How can I get any further documentation? Thank you Janet **************Get the Moviefone Toolbar. Hi Ken It's okay- you should hit "reply all" and in that way the archives will save the information about the person you are looking for. In the future if someone else is searching for info on the same person and they go to archives then they will find the information. "akluz" or whoever there name is was new to the list and obviously didn't realise that we share information in this way. Good luck with your research Donna On 15/11/08 1:29 AM, "Ken Shaza" <sharyna@xtra.co.nz> wrote: > re Boag...Sorry I have also replied directly to subscriber!!
