My Grand-Mother, Annie Logan, worked in Coats & Clark in Paisley and then in the Newark, New Jersey USA about 1922- 1923 retired from there c. 1924 and remained in the US. My mother, Annie Stewart, worked in the Paisley plant until 1921 and came to the USA. They lived at McKerrill St. Paisley from 1900 to 1921: previous to that they lived in Clifden, Co. Galway, Ireland. Anyone remember or tracing the Logan and Stewart families? Please contact me. Jim Stewart.

Hi Margaret et al, Around 1900, the big mills operating in Paisley were the Anchor Mills (of the Clark family) and Ferguslie Mills (of the Coats family). There were almost certainly other smaller cotton mills in the town, but these 2 were the biggies. In addition, there was a whole range of specialist support businesses offering additional process capacity for dyeing, bleaching, finishing, spool-making etc as well as indirect support in engineering, tool making etc. Paisley Library can almost certainly supply information on Coats' and Clark's smaller competitors. Hi all, For Paisley mills, check on these sites: http://www.paisleythread.org/history.php http://www.paisley.org.uk/history/mills.php http://www.renfrewshire.gov.uk/ilwwcm/publishing.nsf/Content/els-jh-AnchorMills John Mac Glasgow
My Dunlops had a cotton mill in what is now Barrhead, and every time I do a Google search for material on "cotton mills" and Renfrew I get heaps about Coats!! Also, there is material from the Dunlop business at the Scottish National ARchives, so presumably there is also stuff about Coats, which was bigger and more recent. My Grandma worked in a spinning mill in Paisley also, although I don't know the name of it. Her sisters probably worked there too. Does anyone know if there is more than one mill operating aroung 1900 ----- Original Message ----- From: <darkwing@shaw.ca> To: <sct-renfrew@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, December 15, 2008 11:38 AM Subject: Re: [SCT-RENFREW] [Renfrew] Coats & Clarks > My Grandmother, some of her sisters and her Father all worked in the > Coats mill.
