    3. Hello Ruth Irene, in her response to you, mentions that the youngest childrens' birth certificates should give you their parents' date and place of marriage. Failing that, the 1911 Scottish Census asked for the place of birth as well as country of birth for those born outside Scotland. This was an addition to previous censuses. It is due to be published on the Scotlands People website next Spring (2011). 3. Hi Ruth According to the 1901 ancestry census transcription they are in 254 Bouverie Terrace, Port Glasgow ... but the 'bad' news is that Robert, Margt and the four eldest children were born in Ireland. Only Isabella and Samuel were born in Scotland. However Samuel or Isabella's birth certificate should give you the date and place of Robert and Margaret's marriage ...hopefully it will give more detail than just Ireland ...and give you a place to start in your Irish search. Images of birth certs are available on scotlandspeople.gov.uk ...it is fee paying but it's not horrendous. 1. Re: [SCT-RENFREW] HOUSTON
    2. Brian, i have no direct connection to George Ludovic Houston, rather an in-direct one. My g/grandfather came to Australia in 1852 and in 1872 he sold a property he owned called "Iverton" to "George Ludovic Houston Esq. of Johnstone Castle for the sum of 120 pounds stirling". I assume that the property was in or near Johnstone. The letter to my g/grandfather from the solicitor, a Mr Barr of 5 County Place, Paisley, is dated "18th Dec. 1872". All that remains of Johnstone Castle is the Keep, the surrounding land was apparently sold off or acquired for housing after WW2. Chopin apparently stayed at the castle while teaching the piano to Houston's wife or daughter. My father's second given name was "Iverton" - after the property. 1. [SCT-RENFREW] 1783 & 1821 Census of Scotland
    2. John Carswell
    3. I have pasted below an extract from an Angus Roots Web Post which may be of interest.:- "Just a wee tad of further information about Census records of Scotland. Agreed, the first official census was 1841. However there were at least two previous censuses taken. 1783 Census by Parish and the 1821 Census by Parish. Both of these censuses were supposed to be taken by the Clergy of the Official Church of Scotland, Parish by Parish. The problem was however that some clergy did not or refused to participate, I am not sure which ( unfortunately I am not old enough to ask them), therefore the records do not exist for each Parish. Also some were no doubt lost and "I am told" there are others that are still in private collections and have not been released to the public. " When searching Google for information on the1783 & 1821 census I came across a good description during this period of Neilston Parish Renfrewshire commencing page 286 http://books.google.com.au/books?id=A0wSAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA291&lpg=PA291&dq=1821+Neilston+Census&source=bl&ots=dErPSMmMTM&sig=HGcuDFNhIBVXy81IeoWFK7ffGDE&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=10&ct=result Hoping the link works. 3. Dear Ian, If you can locate Catherine's convict records, you may find her parents and siblings mentioned on the indent form (if it survived). You should be able to purchase her prison/trial records from the National Archives of Scotland. Try searching the NAS online catalogue for a reference number, and a possible brief description of her crime. 3. I presume you are referring to column 5. Usually, there is a blank line between the father and mother. The father should be listed by name on line 1, occupation on line 2, and, if deceased, that is in brackets on line 3. Then the blank line followed by the mother's name, M.S. (maiden surname) and if she is deceased. Naturally, if the names are long or many, more lines are used.
