    2. I was sorry to read in the JF & S Mitchell edition of Renfrewshire MI's pre 1855 that comparatively few stones remain in the Kilbarchan East Cemetery. The headstones of my family have been lost, and those ancestors do not appear on the Renfrewshire Deaths and Burials Index CD. Luckily, a family member visited the Kilbarchan East Cemetery in 1992 and copied the inscriptions from 3 of our headstones, otherwise I would have no clue as to what happened to those families. It brought home to me the importance of preserving our family history, and I thank all of you involved in this work. Without your dedication, it would be impossible for the rest of us to find our ancestors. Nyle James Blenheim NZ

    3. Hi Michael, I've researched the Poor Relief records at Paisley Library and don't recall seeing any entries for Govan, but you could ask them at http://www.paisley.org.uk/attractions/library.php It's also a while since I worked on Poor Relief records at the Mitchell, but it must be worth asking them about the earliest Govan records. You're right about Govan having been part of Renfrewshire before being assimilated into Glasgow. The same happened in parts of what is now the south side of Glasgow, but it's my understanding that when they all came under Glasgow, their records were transferred too and eventually the surviving records finished up in the Mitchell. If neither Paisley or the Mitchell holds them, it's likely they've been lost a long time ago. 2. Ruth, I am so sorry I forgot that name was William Hamilton MCCARROLL. Remainder of information suggested is the same except further searching under correct name shows 155 possibilities that can be narrowed down. Janet

    1. Re: [SCT-RENFREW] McCarroll Family
    2. If your William Hamilton is from Ireland you will need at least a county or townland that he was from to do further research. Irish genealogy is challenging but given the estimated time frame for his birth, there is documentation available as there was required civil registration of the birth beginning in 1864. Since they were married in Scotland and you have that information, go back to it and review it to see if there are any hints as to where in Ireland. Do you have a middle name or exact date of birth? Both are more than helpful _www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) Has 217 William Hamiltons born in the whole of Ireland, in the time frame ranging from 1881-1891. With year of birth or middle name you can narrow that down to which ones might be him and send to Roscommon Ireland for a copy of the birth certificate. Cost is minimal and they accept fax and credit card. Good luck in your search. Janet

    3. Chris, I'm not sure from your messages what information you already have, but I imagine it would be worth looking at the marriage records for Agnes and the others. They should tell you more, in particular whether the brides' parents' names, for you to decide whether they are your Mackies. These records can be viewed online in the official archives on the Scotland's People site. www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk It looks like most of them are there, though the spelling may differ slightly, e.g. Elizabeth marrying Daniel rather than Elisabeth. It's a pay site, but with the names and dates you have, the costs should be very limited. (NB Mary Mackie's 1851 marriage was before statutory registration in 1855 and so there would only be the old parish marriage record, which is lovely to see and have, but rarely gives as much information.) I have a few marriages found on IGI,tho' nothing definite bar one. Margaret married William MITCHELL 1868 Agnes married Edward MCVICAR 1865 Mary married Joseph THOMSON 1851 I have found a few children born to these couples. The most promising one is Elisabeth MACKIE married Daniel MATHIESON because their first child was Agnes LECKIE MATHIESON and Elisabeth's mother was Agnes LECKIE.
