    3. I have received a marriage certificate where under three of the parents names it has 'decs'. I am assuming that this means deceased. My question for the list is - would writing this on the certificate be common practice everywhere? I have my gt.grandfathers marriage certificate and this is not on it but I was almost positive his father was dead when he married. Does anyone know anything about this? 3. Dear Dorothy, I have a George Hamilton farmer of Barshagra near Neilston marrying Janet Carswell at Craig of Neilston Farm ,Neilston in 1851. George was born in Neilston in 1827 to William Hamilton & Ann Gilmour. Below is an extract from a Neilston Web Site re a George Hamilton. "Shirts, probably the good old-fashioned stiff-fronted type, were sent to a laundry at Holehouse for bleaching and laundering. This laundry became part of Holehouse Farm; it was a fairly large two-storey building and was in use until quite recently as a stable and hay shed. Mr. Hamilton, the tenant, was contracted to Crofthead Mills, and he combined this activity with dairy farming. Before and after the First World War his farm was very popular with the young folks at that end of the village; there was always something 'doing' - if it was not crunching corn or bagging chains, which is cleaning horses' harness chains in bags of sawdust, or feeding pigs, we simply climbed trees, usually for chestnuts. It was a sort of playground for the local youth, and Mr. Hamilton, Geordy, as he was called, seemed happy to encourage young people about the place. Many locals will have happy memories of Holehouse Farm. The laundry building and farm are now non-existent." 3. Hi Mary, I have found that they usually did mark (dec) on the certificates. But I do have a few where I know positively that someone was dead (I have their death certificate) and (dec) doesn't appear. I usually take the info given as a starting point....it may or may not pan out, but it is a start. Isn't that the case in all family tree researching? Happy Hunting! 3. Dorothy, My Lyle names came out of Kilmacolm and I would be interested in any Lyle names from Renfrewshire as some of them did move around a little. I am not linked to the Sugar Refinery Lyles but I do have a small family tree for this line and am very interested in anything that you may have on them. Can anyone tell me if it is usual for scottish widows > to revert to their maiden name? > Thankyou > Mary Campbell This has been discussed several times recently on several of the Scottish Lists. A simple answer is that widows did not "revert" to their maiden name. In fact, they usually did not ever cease to use it - they continued to use their own name throughout the marriage and after (although they may have been known in legal documents by their husband's name as well - but this was often only amongst those families with "pretensions"). Hope this helps. Unless specifically stated otherwise in this message, there is no intentional attachment on this e-mail transmission. 3. Sue The RC Church in Lochwinnoch was built in 1953, prior to that worship was at St. Joseph's College which was run by the Mill Hill Foreign Missionary Society which opened in 1936 in the mansion formerly known as Garthland House. I think before that any RC's would either worship at Howwood or Johnstone or in Ayrshire at Kilbirnie. Hope this helps. 3. The only thing wrong is there is no 1881 Scottish Census because some where else is using it commercially so what is on the LDS site is just England Wales and Northern Ireland. I have looked for my ancestors there finally I bought the 1881 census from the LDS Distribution Center in Salt Lake City. Hope this helps Georgena Turner

I never seem to find anyone from Scotland listed online. But there are 2 CD's covering Scotland (Lowlands and Highlands) and everyone is in there. Jackie
