I have a Daniel McGown that lived in Johnstone and left for the USA in 1869 or 1870 where can I look for his name on a passenger list in Scotland.
Hi listers, I dont know which of these censuses are indexed but I think either may suit my need, so if one is and one isnt then SKS with access to the indexed one may be able to help. I am looking at the Halfway House, Glasgow Road which I know now to be in Abbey parish in 1881, Abbey landward according to death registration. The head of household in both decades would be William (D) Allan b abt 1815. In 1861 he would be a widower, in 1871 he had remarried to Agnes b 1830. Her mother Margaret Kerr b 1798 could be living with them too. Children living in the household include Hugh b 1841, Mary b 1858 and Margaret b 1854. I am hoping for other names. I am also hoping that a Robert Paton or Kerr would be living there, he was blind and was Agnes' nephew. He was born 1850 paisley. He is supposed to have been brought up by an aunt and I am hoping it was Agnes. If it is the 1861 which is indexed then Agnes may have been living with her mother at either Storie Street or 15 Barr street Paisley - with or withour nephew Robert Paton or Kerr. If neither census is indexed then it will have to wait till i can search it myself in the summer. however if some kind soul is able and willing to help then it will advance things considerably. If anyone happens to recognise the names then i'd be happy to hear from you. Moira
Go to Google search engine and type in ships lists. This will bring up a number of websites for you to search. Good luck. Joan
Hi: I am trying to verify the parents of MATTHEW GIBB and MARGARET LOVE who were married 1March 1821 at Kilmacolm. The information I had was that the was the s/o James Gibb and Jean Sinclair and she was the d/o of Alexander Love and Margaret Fleming. I have been looking for the parents of MARGARET LOVE and JOSEPH MARSHALL who were married 13 Apr 1822 at Kilmacolm and received the information that she was the d/o Alexander Love and Margaret Fleming and he was the s/o Joseph Marshall and Helen Laird. They cann't be the same Margaret Love as they both went on to have children well beyond the marriage dates. Can anyone help me to find the true parents? Elenore Kamloops, B.C.

You may find this interesting..... Most Common Name in Scotland Smith, Brown and Wilson are the top three surnames in Scotland, according to a survey carried out by the General Register Office for Scotland for the years 1999-2001. There has been little change in the most frequently found surnames over the last 140 years. Smith has been the most common surname in all surveys since that covering the early years of civil registration. Over 1 in 8 surnames in Scotland begin with Mac/Mc but patterns of surnames differ widely in different geographical areas. The top 10 Surnames in Scotland, using a sample of over 335,000 names from registrations in 1999, 2000 and 2001 are, in sequence: Smith, Brown, Wilson, Campbell, Stewart, Thomson, Robertson, Anderson, Mac Donald and Scott. The top ten names account for 7.9 per cent and the top 20 account for 12.4 per cent of all the names. Information on the top 10 surnames in Scotland by area is available at http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/grosweb/grosweb.nsf/pages/01surnames together with analysis of surnames from the 1901 Census. Cheers, Jim

My grandmother was Jessie BROWN born ca. 1883 in the Glasgow area. There are hundreds of Jessie Browns. Doesn't help that her mother was also Jessie Brown nee Gurley. Father was James Andrew Brown....again, hundreds of them. LORI (Michigan USA)
