    3. That helps a lot Julie, thanks. I had suggested in the question that it might be geographical, so that has now been confirmed, and I'm pleased not to have to dig out a hammer and cold chisel to discover the churches my forebears attended. :-) However I'm wondering if having admitted to being a Sassenach the Jocks are giving me the run around <big grin> I had rather hoped that someone would give me more than a one word answer - for instance which churches were (are) described under the three headings in Renfrew/Paisley (did I mention that in the question?) so that I can identify them on a map. Any help in this direction would be appreciated Cheers Brian

    3. As Charles said, they are geographical. For example, in Greenock, the original Parish is known as West or Old Greenock. When the Parish got to big and it split, you then had West/Old and Middle/New, plus you have East Greenock Parish. I have an Elizabeth Reside WEIR b 7 Feb 1832 at Greenock, who was the daughter of a Duncan WEIR who married Christina PHILIPS on 1 Sep 1823 at the Low Church in Paisley. However Christina herself was christened at the Middle Church on 8 Jan 1803, the daughter of David PHILIP and Elizabeth RAESIDE. They married at the Low Church. Elizabeth was the daughter of James RESIDE, but the only marriage I can find in the IGI is at Stevenston, Ayr, when a James RESIDE married an ELizabeth SMITH on 21 Jun 1775. If so was he a miner and did the family live in Lancashire at any time? Hugh, under a different surname, later lived in Irvine, Ayr (not too far from your interests) and married a Jane Taylor in 1860. I hope that you can help. 3. Hi Chris... So far my BRADSHAWs seem to originate in the Renfrewshire area of Scotland just south of Glasgow (and very much north from Lancashire). They seem to appear with the marriage of Thomas BROADSHAW and Janet TAYLOR at Paisley in 1827. Unfortunately, both died just before civil registration and I only have census info about them. Their children are all born in Renfrewshire. There are some early scattered BRADSHAWs from the 1700s in this area of Scotland but nothing links up to my line at present. I'm wondering if Thomas came from the northern Ireland branch of the Bradshaws but I have no proof. No apparent siblings or parents. I am on the Renfrew list too, hoping and waiting for something to turn up. Of course if I ever do trace them back to Lancashire, I'll be in for a long haul as there seems to be almost as many Bradshaws in that area as Smiths!
