    3. Thelma, The Broomielaw was/is a quay on the north bank of the River Clyde near central Glasgow (quite a long way upriver from Renfrew). In my youth it was the quay that serviced the Irish ferries and also the paddle steamers that took day trippers "doon the watter". 2. Thelma, Welcome to the List, and I hope that someone can help. Unfortunately, I don't have any connections to the names you list and so can't help you at this time. However, a gentle suggestion: When replying to a List message, please snip out all the material not pertinent to your request or comment, as I have done below in replying to your very long posting. Some members pay the minute for their e-mail and such long postings are a problem to them. Besides, it adds clutter for everyone and may interfere with the clarity of your own request. :-) I hope that your research will be extended by other List members. Unless specifically stated otherwise in this message, there is no intentional attachment on this e-mail transmission. Welcome to the SCT-RENFREW mailing list! You are currently subscribed in "mail mode", which means that you will receive every posting made to SCT-RENFREW as a separate e-mail. The directions on how to change to digest mode are given below. 1. How to unsubscribe. Send a message to SCT-RENFREW-L-request@rootsweb.com that contains (in the body of the message) the command unsubscribe and no additional text. 2. How to subscribe. Whatever you just did worked, or you'd not be getting this message. But for future reference (for instance, if your subscription is cancelled for whatever reason and you want to resubscribe), just send the command "subscribe" to SCT-RENFREW-L-request@rootsweb.com. 3. How to change to digest mode (several postings are combined and sent to you together as a single large message). There are two steps. First, send the command "unsubscribe" to SCT-RENFREW-L-request@rootsweb.com to discontinue mail mode. Second, send the command "subscribe" to SCT-RENFREW-D-request@rootsweb.com to start receiving digests. 4. How to change to NOMAIL mode. There is no formal NOMAIL mode. All you have to do is follow the directions above and unsubscribe when you want the messages to stop, and then when you want them to start again, simply subscribe again. 5. If you'd like to post a message so everyone on the mailing list receives it, just send it to SCT-RENFREW-L@rootsweb.com. It will then be sent on to everyone in both mail and digest mode. You don't need to send it explicitly to both. For your verification, a transcript of the original subscription request is included below. -- >From mrbirrell@bigpond.com Mon Mar 24 04:00:03 2003 >Received: from mail.rootsweb.com (mail.rootsweb.com [192.168.16.34]) > by lists5.rootsweb.com (8.12.8/8.12.8) with ESMTP id h2OB03qZ010913 > for <SCT-RENFREW-L-request@lists5.rootsweb.com>; Mon, 24 Mar 2003 04:00:03 -0700 >Received: from mta06bw.bigpond.com (mta06bw.bigpond.com [139.134.6.96]) > by mail.rootsweb.com (8.12.8/8.12.4) with ESMTP id h2OB01Sd014571 > for <SCT-RENFREW-L-request@rootsweb.com>; Mon, 24 Mar 2003 04:00:02 -0700 >Received: from matt ([144.135.24.81]) by mta06bw.bigpond.com > (Netscape Messaging Server 4.15 mta06bw Jul 16 2002 22:47:55) > with SMTP id HC92J300.3AQ for > <SCT-RENFREW-L-request@rootsweb.com>; Mon, 24 Mar 2003 20:59:27 +1000 >Received: from 144.139.132.127 ([144.139.132.127]) by bwmam05.bigpond.com(MailRouter V3.2g 38/6935823); 24 Mar 2003 20:59:18 >Message-ID: <002301c2f1f4$7a9f9c30$7f848b90@matt> >From: "Thelma" <mrbirrell@bigpond.com> >To: <SCT-RENFREW-L-request@rootsweb.com> >Subject: >Date: Mon, 24 Mar 2003 20:59:35 +1000 >MIME-Version: 1.0 >Content-Type: text/plain; > charset="Windows-1252" >Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit >X-Priority: 3 >X-MSMail-Priority: Normal >X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2720.3000 >X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2600.0000 > >subscribe > >

    3. Hi Wilma, I promised I'd look out for Lachlan Mcneil. I have found a reference to one but realise I could drive you nuts with continually finding the wrong one. What do you know about his likely date of birth, occupation, location and date of death. In other words what sightings do you have of him? Is he a rare name or are there loads of them out there? All I know so far is that he must have been old enough to produce a child of marriageable age in 1851 ie b 1831 or earlier, I assume he died before stat registration? 3. Hi Brian Charles, Ron, Julie et al, Low Church (or Laigh Kirk) was built in 1738 and is currently the Paisley Arts Centre. A photo of it is at the following site: http://www.houston-menswear.co.uk/paisley/sightseeing.htm#Arts High Church, dating from 1750, was built at the highest part of town (geological and geographical!) on Oakshawhead and is now known as the Oakshaw Trinity Parish Church. See photos at: http://www.rpasmith.co.uk/paisley.htm http://www.geocities.com/mjjodoin/irreg.htm Now the Middle Church, I am a little unclear on. It is supposedly somewhere in the middle of town above the Cross of Paisley. Perhaps someone else can offer a more definitive location? Hope this helps - somewhat.
