Isobel (Isabell) Lyle has two dates for her marriage and I believe there is a transcription error in it as the first date is shown as 25 April 1793 (marriage banns?). The second marriage date is listed as you said 8th May 1794. Someone else may have the answer for this one I hope. >David and Margaret were married 12 March 1763 at Kilmalcolm but I have yet >to find their parents. This marriage is listed as 12 January 1765 on the IGI. David Lyle was born 31 October 1731. His parents were David Lyle & Janet Lyle who married 21st August 1729. 1. [Renfrew] Re: [D-G LIST] Re: Auchencairn Cemetery Headstone
    2. maryegger
    3. Thank you, Ed, for your insight re the inscription by R. Little, C.B., at the foot of the headstone fro Agnes McLean and James Clint in Auchencairn Cemetery. This begs the question, however: I wonder how my antecedents could have afforded to pay such an auspicious gentleman, shall we say, to put his imprimatur at the bottom of the headstone. From what I can understand "my ain folk were puir and plain folk," to paraphrase the song, most earning their living as agricultural workers. John Clint, who, to my untrained eye, was a talented artist, may have been the exception and could very well have been acquainted with R. Little, CB. There is the possibility that Robert Little, therefore, either offered his services gratis to design the headstone, or was commissioned by someone in the family who had a wee bitty extra siller to throw around. Another divergent road to explore! It has been suggested that headstones would have been comparatively cheap in the 19th century as the Dalbeattie granite works are fairly close by. Still, somebody HAD to be paid to "dress" the stones and make the inscriptions, and as it is a skill in itself, must not have come "cheap" even :"back then". I wonder if any memorial stone companies kept records from the 1700s on about the charges for the various-sized headstones, numbers of letters inscribed, etc., and best of all, who ordered and paid for the stones. Nowadays it is not an inexpensive undertaking to provide for modest gravestones, never mind larger headstones. Thank you again for your contribution to this Scarlet Pimpernel mystery! 3. Dear Janet I would be interested to see the census for the following people: Jessie Dalziel Adam (nee McLachlan) and David Adam - they were married in 1871 so I don't know whether it was before or after the census. Later on (on the 1881 census) they were living at 2 Cathkin Terrace, Cathcart, Renfrenshire. He was in the printing business and I would be interested to know where he lived. He was born on 15.1.1837 so he would be 34 years old. It would be interesting to know where he lived if this is the only information available. His (David Adam) parents were Alexander Adam and Bruce (female) Wilson, but I think they lived in Dunfermline - well they were married in Dunfermline, but perhaps they moived to Renfrewshire. This couple had 6 children but they were born betwee 1790 and 1813. If they are living in Cathcart perhaps you could let me know and I cangive you the names of all their children. Many thanks. 1. [Renfrew] Lyall's of Abbey Paisley
    2. Dear Listers, I just thought I'd repost my intrest. Researching Thomas Lyall of Abbey Paisley b. January 13, 1838. He was the son of William Lyall a weaver and Elizabeth Rodger or Rodgers. The problem I have is on Thomas Lyall's OPR from Abbey his father has the first name of William and on his Thomas Lyall's death extract from Ferguslie, Paisley in 1899 it list his fathers first name as Thomas. His parents marriage took place on February 12, 1836 in the Parish of Abbey, Paisley. Have any other listers come across this before?. Does anyone have access to the OPR's from the 1830's who could verify this for me?. I would be willing to do look up on the 1881 census in return, which I have . Sincerely, Amy Gilroy
