    3. Hi Jackie, No its at my local library! Rather hit and miss, one great uncle was there complete with photo, date and place of birth....another was absent. The one who was there was an engineer, the other just a steward. They were both local but it is a national resource. I dont mind doing a look up for you. I,ve not got to Kew yet but I am told having a number makes it manyfold easier. If I break a leg and have six months off it's the archive I'd like to put on line! I dont see why they wouldn't let me. Only trouble is my legs are both intact! 3. Hi Irene: I've just forwarded your note to another couple of STEEL researchers, that I've been in touch with, but we haven't found any connection yet - hopefully your original message will be of interest to one or other of them. As to my Robert Steel - Well, I don't know if I HAVE a Robert Steel. All I have on my "Steels" at the moment is: 1. Mary Allan married Matthew Stirrat at Saltcoats/Ardrossan (Ayrshire) in 1802. She was the daughter of William Allan and Janet Steel, and was born at Stevenston, Ayrshire in 1783 (census and death reg. info) I haven't done any other research on STEELs yet (or it might be STEELE), so I don't know if this Robert Steel could be a descendant from Janet Steel's family. But thank you for your interest. Cheers, Phyllis, in a VERY white Calgary (big spring snow storm, hasn't stopped snowing in over 12 hours, and there's about a foot of it out there!!! - no kidding)!!! 1. [Renfrew] BRUCE families in Paisley and Barrhead
    2. Mike Trowsdale
    3. Hi List I am looking for anyone related to either of the following families. a) In 1881 Laurence Bruce b 1838 Perth was married to Elizabeth ? b 1839 Perth and living at 10 Wardrop Street, Paisley Low Church . They had three children Robert b 1859 Milton Glasgow, Elizabeth b 1862 Paisley and Wm. b 1866 in Paisley. Laurence was an Engineers Pattern Maker as was his son Robert. b) In 1881 David Bruce b 1853 Perth was married to Isabella ? b 1853 Glasgow and living at 2 Stow Place, Paisley Low Church . They had three children George b 1876, Alexander b 1879 and Mary b 1880 all in Paisley. David Bruce was an Engineers Patternmaker. I believe the Father of the Laurence and David Bruce mentioned was a George Bruce who married a Helen Mather in Redgorton, Perth in Jan 1827. They had several other children Margaret , Peter, Thomas, William , Ann, John , James and Helen. My wife ( a McKinney) is descended from John Bruce who married a Hannah Williamson in Yarm in Yorkshire. We know that subsequent generations of Bruce lived in Barrhead but have lost contact. Are you one of those families or know of them? We have a small photo of Bruces at Barrhead if you are connected please let me know off list and I will send you a copy in Jpg format. Other later generations had connections to a Bob Jamieson who had some sort of foundry or metal working factory in the Barrhead area. Other names connected to the family in later generations are STARK , WILKINSON AND McKINNEY. Hoping to hear from anyone with info Mike

    3. Dear Marjorie, I understand that going to Kew with just a name is likely to be a long and tedious process. If Robert was a fisherman you have no choice, but if he was a merchant seaman, especially if he got a ticket as a mate or similar then he might be in my local archives. Then you'd have a number for him too. These are free to search. Do you have a date of birth and place of birth for Robert, If so I will have a look for you. 1. [Renfrew] Sailors Robert STEEL
    2. Ahoy the List, The info below was valid in 1999. The Merchant Shipping Act 1835 (providing for crew lists and agreements) came into being. These records (I think) are at Kew in BT 98. Masters of foreign voyage ships and those of vessels over 80 tons in coastal fishery etc. had to enter a written agreement with every seaman on conditions of service. On return to a home port the master of a foreign trade voyage had to deliver a list of seamen to the Registrar General of Shipping and Seamen. Try Lloyds Register of Shipping or The Merchantile Navy List, Kew, (incomplete) or The Guildhall Library, the address in 1999 was, Aldermanbury, London, EC2P 2EJ. I hope this helps. I can't vouch for the info, I am just reporting it. (researching MARTIN, LYLE, MURRAY, KEDER) Bon Voyage, Charles Martin

    2. Marjorie, PS to my first message - the listing furnishes the names of widows, etc and other families of seamen who needed assistance. Sorry. If you don't get a response re the Library address at Kew (England) let me know and I will dig thru my many, many documents to see if I can locate name and address. Love you "Aussies". J.

    2. About 3 years ago I was interested in locating a Hugh Young who was "lost at sea" and in writing around found that there is a record - don't remember the name of it- which is on file at Kew Library (this is not the proper name of the organization but you could find out by inserting another ad in this forum) It is arranged alpha so woould be easy to check. Hope this helps and good luck! Juanita Patterson MObile, Alabama
