    1. [Renfrew] New to Research - Looking for TAYLOR, BLAIR
    2. Hi All, I have been researching my family tree for about six months and have done very well with information from the LDS family history center and Scotland's People, but I find I have hit several brick walls and can't go on. One of those walls is for hte parents of Catherine Taylor. Catherine was born to John TAYLOR and Isabella BLAIR in Greenock, Renfrewshire around 1835. I don't know Catherine's birth date. Catherine also married Kinnaird Robb in Govan, Lanarkshire in 1857. Isabella (Catherine's mother), was born in Greenock around 1803 and that is all the information I have. I would like to find out both John and Isabella's birthdates and their marriage information as well as any data on their parents. Does anyone out htere have any census information? Scotland's People is no help here as the names are too common and I don't have any idea where they lived. I would greatly appreciate any help to get me moving forward again. Thanks! Shona in Oregon

    1. [Renfrew] 1851 census - HOUSTON, Archibald
    2. I've been searching for the birth of my Archibald HOUSTON who claims to come from Paisley. I found his parents' announcement of marriage bans in the "early church records" of Kilbarchan and Lochwinnoch. Colin HOUSTON was born in Kilbarchan, Renfrew, Scotland. He married MARY SMITH March 22, 1828 in She was born in Lochwinnoch, Renfrew, Scotland. Colin was a weaver. According to censuses, Archibald's birthdate is variously between 1836 and 1841. On his wedding registration in 1871, he says he is 35 which puts his birth year at 1836. I cannot find a record of his birth in all the church records of Paisley, but found on his wedding registration that he belonged to the Free Church, which may be why I can't find him... his parents could have been part of the break-away, too. In the 1851 census he would be between 10 and 14 years old, then. There may be other children, but I haven't found them either. So, if you see a Colin and Mary HOUSTON with a child Archibald about that age, it would certainly be appreciated. Judy Miller in sunny Arizona

    3. Hi Don, Thank you very much for your kind offer. I have used the Paisley Local Studies Library and found them to be very helpful, however, I am still awaiting a reply to a question I have asked them so don't want to burden them too much. I would be ever so grateful if you could look in the 1841 census for this family of brothers who I believe were all weavers and all born in Paisley. In the 1851 census, some of them lived on George Street, which I believe is High Parish. Alexander McNAUGHT, b. 1783 Peter McNAUGHT, b. 1786 James McNAUGHT, b. 1792 John Peter McNAUGHT, b. 1797 Walter McNAUGHT, b. 1803 They also had two sisters: Margaret McNAUGHT, b. 1789, mar. William LOCHHEAD 1810 Janet McNAUGHT, b. 1795, mar. William McEWEN 1814 Any information you can give me will be greatly appreciated. 3. Dear Kate, The 1851 census for barrhead and neilston is on line. I dont uses urls, use Google and put in Neilston and census. There is a McCormack family headed by a David (sic?) with a 16 year old Thomas and eight other siblings. It sounds like it may be the family you are looking for. 3. Hi Julie - I spoke with you some months ago re any info you might find about my g. uncle James Moncrieff & family who emigrated to your area from Argenteuil Co., Quebec about 1920 or so. His wife was Annie Green, both are buried in Martin's Ferry Cemetery. Son Herman James b. about 1914 married Eileen Walpin; daughter Dorothy Maud married Richard Todd. I was able to obtain obits for Jim and Annie; and received a note lately that Eileen Walpin had died in January 2003, no other info. I have children's names for both Herman and Maudie but nothing further as to whereabouts. I and several other 'cousins' here would like to attempt a contact and I wonder if you could help. My second plea for help follows your offer to do a lookup on 1851 census for any Stewart's who might be still living in the Glasgow area of old Barony Parish, Maryhill district. The only one I have record of is my ancestor Charles who with his adult family emigrated to Quebec in about 1820; he had several sibs I have had no luck finding are records for. I hoped some Stewarts might still be in that area at 1851 census time. Thanks for any help you are able to give.
